Hi
I have seen available to buy refillable gas bottles for retro fit into motorhome gas lockers from the likes of gasit and gaslow (particularly the kits with remote filler points either external or internal to the gas locker). The question also applies to van conversions fitted with underslung gas storage tanks.
If you have such a system fitted to your vehicle, how do you find the ease of getting them refilled with gas with respect to the filling being permitted by the gas supplier. Do you use car fuel forecourts (eg petrol stations that supply lpg) or is there a network of lpg suppliers not on petrol station forecourts? And do you think a gas locker internal gas refill point will restrict the number of places that will allow the refill of the bottles? My question is aimed at refilling in the UK with the internal to the gas locker filler point. The potential savings on gas cost look attractive but i don't want to invest the cash only to find out it is difficult to find places to get the bottles refilled. Thanks in advance for your replies and advice.

No problems with ours so far.   We've got an internal filler behind one of the side sliding doors. It does possibly look like we're filling using an external point.

Hi,

When we had our system fitted, I took into account that at some garages you are likely to find that the person at the cash desk might not turn on the filling point (They can turn it off and on remotely) if they think that a non refillable ie calor gas bottle was being filled illegally.

For that reason I decided that the filler point would be fitted on the outside of the van rather than having to open the door.

Having said that, for the first season I used the refillables, I had the gloves and adaptors (needed for filling abroad)in the gas bottle locker and I had no problems but there was no need to risk it so the gloves were moved elsewhere (Just in case)

We have an underslung tank (standard fitting) and we fill up with autogas, usually at Morrison’s supermarkets as they’re cheapest for us. It’s useful to have an app (we use myLPG.eu) for when we’re away and I need to get some gloves on board for the icy blow back when I uncouple the hose. But I can’t advise re filling other gas containers, sorry.

We have the gaslow system fitted with an outside filling point.
It takes a lot of fillings to recoup your outlay with the savings you make.

Our decision was for convenience. particularly in europe, rather than cost.

Hi, I have a Gasit system that I fitted myself to replace the cylinders in an external locker. The filling point is on the outside of the motorhome. I use a petrol forecourt to fill the single tank. It is much cheaper (excluding initial purchase of course)and more convenient. I suppose one should be asking why is Calor so expensive! I would recommend it in conjunction with a legal filling system.

Thank you all for your replies and for sharing your experiences. Spiritburner, am i correct that the round black thing in the top left of the large wwodgrained panel in the side of your van is your gas filler point? If so, have you ever been refused a gas refill? As mentioned by others the appeal of a refillable gas system is cost of the gas and the convenience of filling up before running out. My 2 worries are firstly is lpg readily available in the UK and second, i do not want to cut a big hole in the side of my van to fit an external filler (for warranty reasons) so do lpg vendors refuse to allow the refill of bottles with a gas locker fitted refill point. And as an afterthought, can the filler point be fitted externally but below the vans bodywork to avoid cutting big holes (ie fitted like the fresh water/waste water drain points under the van)?

Aye - it is. Had no problems so far. I'm told the UK filling points are reducing but we use so little gas the tank lasts us at least a year so we'd just fill up abroad where it's more readily available. We always have a backup stove as we cook outside a lot of the time.

an increasing number of motorhome owners (and a majority of self builds) install a diesel heater for heating (and hot water using a Bobil heater)

that cuts down on gas usage to just fridge (if not on EHU) and cooking, so the gas lasts a lot longer.

take a look on youtube for diesel heaters

ps, a lot of expensive motorhomes have very expensive factory fitted diesel heaters, but others fit chinese or russian ones and find them just as good

Aye - our heater is a Russian Planar & it's been great.   I got a cheap Chinese one for the workshop that's not been as good but at leats it's easy to work on. We only cook on gas. Fridge is 12v.

So although there seems to be a reducing number of lpg suppliers at the moment, are there enough to be able to find one when touring in the UK? What happens, for example, to owners of camper van type vehicles with underslung gas tanks (for space saving reasons many are fitted with these tanks from new by the manufacturer) need to refill? My question is - what is the point of a refillable bottle/tank if there is nowhere to actually refill it? Or am i worrying about nothing - are there enough lpg suppliers to make refilling easy enough? Your comments are greatly appreciated!!
