AS you can see from the replies a lot of it is personal taste. I think having young kids will really determine what you do, I dream of getting a campervan and driving with the wife into the sunset, but the kids arent at uni yet and it will have to wait. So I have a caravan which is bigger and better suited for kids.
A tent is a good idea to start with especially as prices are high. we had a big family tent for years, had some great holidays. As the kids got bigger we ended up taking so much stuff it took forever to pack, so we upgraded to cheap 2nd hand caravan. Thats brilliant with the kids. They prefer to stay in one place not move every few days so a caravan is better suited to that. Down side, is you have to tow it. I hate towing but thats doesnt affect the kids.
When I looked at campers I decided they were too expensive and too small for 2 kids (12 and 8 at the time). They are now 17 and 13 and no way would they fit in a camper. Maybe a massive MH but not a camper. We're even thinking of the eldest having a pop up tent as it is.
I think young kids would love a camper but they will grow bigger. Also tents are great for kids thats proper camping, not this swanning about with electrcity and TV's and running water.
I think decide what the kids would like, though maybe its too early to tell, honestly, happy kids happy wife, happy wife happy dad.
