Anyone had problems finding a petrol station with LPG for motorhome with an lpg tank to fill. Went to 2 which are stated as having it, but on arrival been removed during lockdown, chap said they are being taken away nationwide..!!....Surely not. I have a website for Worldwide LPG listing, but obviously it's not up to date.. Checked internet and finding sites saying things like "BP removing LPG due to lack of use"... "Shell garages doing away with LPG"... Any info anyone has would be great.. Thanks.
We don’t have many BP or Shell garages up here but we used to get it at Morrison’s. Haven’t checked this year yet as our campsites aren’t open.
However, our local Calor compound won’t be replacing its pump when it packs in, due to lack of demand.
Interesting because LPG is still needed by houses that aren’t on the gas pipe network.
PS The AA app shows if a garage has LPG. That’s how we found a remote fuel station when we needed it.
Fiona, many of the small villages, farms and remote houses here rely on either oil or LPG for heating. While most in this village use oil, including my immediate neighbour, use LPG. It used to be Calor, but it was proving increasingly expensive, so now she uses Gauld. They primarily supply Scottish farms, but also some domestic properties.
I find it more difficult to get Calor gas cylinders for the camper. Several dealers have switched to Flogas, however some builders merchants still stock Calor cylinders.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Thanks for your comments.. We live in Lincolnshire and not much around apart from one in A1/A57 junction and one at Loughborough which is no use if we're heading East!.. Will check the AA app too
Capt L, we need LPG for the underslung tank, the OP may be the same. Not an easy option, swapping back to canisters with whatever in them.
Cross that bridge if & when we get to it: a tank lasts us a year because we only use it for cooking & we have an electric hob too. Different if you do a lot of off grid / off site overnight parking so you’re using much more gas for heating & hot water too.
We've never relied on garages for LPG for our underslung tank as we've found then unreliable and as you say many have stopped supplying it.
We use one of our local bulk suppliers instead. At one they don't allow you to fill up yourself, which is no bad thing in my book, and with the other you have to register and they provide you with a key. The gas is a bit more expensive as I think there is a difference in duty between LPG for cars etc and LPG for heating etc. but they have never let us down.
There is a map here that shows a couple of suppliers in Lincolnshire that are not garages. You may have more luck with them.
I would have thought LPG would have been much more widely available by now. I ran two Transit trucks on it back in the late 70s/early 80s and didn't have much of a problem getting filled up, and I travelled all over England, Wales, and occasionally into Scotland as far as Aberdeen docks. Only occasionally did I have to switch over to petrol. I used to carry a map with all the places I could get it.
Think that garages/service stations etc are busily promoting/installing electric vehicles charging points nowadays, installing LPG storage tanks probably not economical for them
Thanks all for your location help...noticed yesterday that the one we used to use on A57/A1 jct now gone too...Chris and Sandra.. Found one in Lincoln from your map... Thanks muchly 😍 xxxx
Typical. I have recently bought a dual fuel camper, and only last week had the LPG side all checked out so that I could use it with some safety. I have no experience yet of being turned away as the garage has stopped selling it. I am also happy to kep a full petrol tank as a reserve, if I can get away with LPG all the time. Bearing in mind that the petrol neds using beefore it goes stale.
I don't think there's any problem this type of post has been appearing for the last ten years or so which if it was true would mean there should be none left by now.
Coming back from Cornwall we passed 3 garages with autogas when we got onto the M5 saw another two and then on M4 another two. mean while where I live I have 4 refill places within an 8 mile radius + Morrisons about to add to that number.
