Hi,

Does anyone out there happen to have replaced or had replaced a roof gas strut for a Toyota Regius Hiace pop top? Newly acquired 1998 Jap import which had a professional conversion to campervan with rear elevating full roof in 2015, however, when i opened the roof for the first time, the nearside strut has completely sheared from the linkage to the roof. I have sourced company who manufacture the strut (Metrol in Northampton), but as i can't lower the roof, i cannot drive to an appropriate campervan dealer, so will need to attempt to replace myself. Looks simple enough, but i know only too well that it never really is!

Any advice/tips before i order the new struts (come in pairs), would be gratefully accepted!

Thanks

Shoubie

Is there an owners club that might be able to give you some advice? Most of the imported vehicles seem to have a loyal band of enthusiasts who are willing to offer help and advice otherwise your local mobile caravan mechanic might be worth a try.

Hi are the struts bolted or riveted on? if riveted the old rivets will need to be drilled out, use the same diameter drill bit as the fixing holes in your new struts and make sure you get the right size pop rivets (same size as the fixing hole on new struts) and you will need a rivet gun and most important replace both struts
       hope that helps a bit
               cheers Bruce

Thanks Bruce. Luckily struts are bolt on so just waiting for Metrol to confirm they have the exact model with correct fitting and torque.
Was going to chock blocks of wood to support roof as although Metrol say one strut will support weight I'm worried it would buckle the front scissor jack mechanism. Wasn't expecting this problem so early but guess it is better for the issue to happen at home rather than out on travels!

good luck with it and at least when you have fitted the new struts you know it will be good for years to come also Metrol springs are a great company I used to know some of the guys that worked for them, enjoy your camper van
