Hello, Can someone let a newbie to motor-homing know how long a blue fresh water hose I would need under normal circumstances.
Thank you. Brian.

two metres would do if the tap is less than two metres away, however ten metres would be needed if the tap was just under ten metres away.
So no fixed in stone answer to your query I'm afraid.
No two sites will have to tap in the same place, We carry a ten mtr length, also another five mtr length we can join up if needed.
Might sound like I'm being sarcastic with my answer, however I'm not..Take a little extra just incase.
( Chance favours the prepared ).

👌👌👌👍

Thanks Kevin, common sense answer!, having just purchased a motorhome and not used it as yet I wondered if there was a standard length everyone uses.

Just to let you know. I have never had to join the extra length on. Its always there in the van tho! 👌

Also have a twin water tap connector, the one that excepts the larger and smaller tap fitting. Cheap as chips from any hardware store £ 2-3 is all.

This sort of thing...........

Unless you want to drink water from the on-board tank, I wouldn't worry about a blue hose. I always recommend keeping drinking water in a separate container and only using the tank water for washing. Others will disagree, but do whatever you are happy with.

If you are totally new to this game, I'd say that it's easy at first to over equip yourself with things you never use.

I bought a cheap 10m hose from Wilco, carried in the van for a year and only used it twice.
Replaced with a 7Lt watering can, does the job well.
Don't make the mistake of leaving home with a full tank, it is a lot of extra weight to have, and you will save on fuel. There is allways somewhere where you can find water.

I was on a full service pitch (booked it in case the facilities were not allowed to open) for my first trip in my new van soon after 12 April, and had a 5m collapsible blue hose with me.

The way I parked my van meant the water inlet was on the wrong side of the tap, and 5m was not quite long enough.

The site ran out of blue hose to sell, so I popped into the nearest Go Outdoors (I needed to go there for something else) and bought an universal adaptor kit that comes with a 7.5m hose, and it was just the right length.

I did not have to get the kit as I could have parked the van differently. However, I thought I might need the kit in case I decide to get an Aquaroll at a later date, or I could sell the kit later.

When I got home, I bought a 10m length collapsible hose, to supplement the 5m one I already have, and can join the two together if I need to.

Being collapsible, they packed up small and do not take up much space.

I've got a 25m food grade hose, plus another 10m section of hose plus a 5m section with the Whale connector to plug into the van (it's a Bailey which only has the Whale fitting).

Contrary to what others have said, I have used all of these as I've been on rallies where I can't get any closer to the tap (usually due to the ground).

Prior to having the Bailey, we used to use a 10 litre watering can butit takes an awful lot of trips to fill the tank up. A hose is much quicker and potentially, less effort.

We have a good selection of hose fittings that allow us to connect up to any tap, the B&Q blue range are cheap and effective.

Generally we try not to travel with a whole load of water on-board for fuel economy reasons, there are though a couple of circumstances when I would, these are when it's gusty conditions, the underslung water tank of the Bailey means the 100 litres of water provides a useful 100kg of ballast low down and helps with the stability. The second would be when travelling to a France Passion site where there may not be any water or it might be difficult to reach.

Welcome to UKCS, Alibri.
Many bigger sites have a hose as part of their MH service point, so I think we last used our (blue) hose (forgotten how long it is, came new with the MH) about 3 years ago. The most awkward stand pipes to get to - e.g. drive over soft grass and the tap's inside an enclosure - favour caravan folks who roll up a water carrier to fill it up.
A full tank may last 3 days if you're using it for everything, maybe a week if you're using site showers and filling the kettle & dog bowl at the nearest standpipe. All in all, if you fill up first at home, you may not need your own pipe as often as you think. But some prefer to drive empty and fill on arrival - that's a debate in other threads already.

-------------
2024 = 20 sites / 41 nights. 2023 = 9/23. 2022 = 13/35. 2021 = 11/29. 2020 = 4/20. 2019 = 13/35. 2018 = 20/33. 2017 = 10/22. 2016 = 19/33. 2015 = 15 sites / 27 nights. Didn't count 1976 to 2014.
