Starting to get my recently acquired Toyota Hiace Regius campervan sorted for a trip with replacing the gas struts on the roof (what a job), but now just trying to understand how the two fitted 240v sockets in the van should work, if anyone can offer advice please?
I have a split charger for car and van charger and on the indicator and fuse panel next to fridge i have a selector switch for Car/Van.
When in the Van position, the internal lights and fridge work of the leisure battery fine, but the 2 x 240v sockets don't.
When i plug in my hook up cable to my domestic home 240v socket then the sockets work, so is it the case that these sockets can only work from a mains hook up? It's a bit disappointing if that is the case as i was hoping that these could be used just of the leisure battery as mostly my trips will be of grid. I have checked fuses that are visible in van on the Charge and indicator panel and only one i can see that may relate to these is 'auxiliary' which is a 10A fuse, all others relates to specific items, eg. Fridge, lights.

If you want 240v from a 12v leisure battery you will need to install an inverter.

However lengthy use of an inverter will quicky flatten the leisure battery, so you need to use only the essential 240v items and if a 12v option is available use it.

The 240V sockets normally only work when connected to the mains.

Yes , it's probable the 240v sockets will only work with mains plugged in, unless you have an inverter in the system too. (Which as mentioned will quickly flatten the battery) It's likely there's no inverter though

I don't think your fridge will work off the leisure battery except when the vehicle engine is running.

Yes Fiona, I was just about to make the same point, unless it's a compressor fridge. You should not run an absorption fridge from the batteries, but you will need 12V. for the ignition.

Agree that an inverter is an inefficient option for providing 240V.

The three pin sockets are exactly the same as you have at home so will only function when hooked up to 240 volt mains. also, the 12 volt and 240 volt circuits are completely different which the 12 volt circiuts are protected by fuses and the 240 volt mains supply is protected by trip switched at the miniature circuit breakers (MCB's).
