Hi all,

I'm new here and just joined because i am lost when it comes to all this wiring solar panel stuff.

I bought 2x 100w solar panels by looking around online it's seems the thinker the cable the safer it is, so some say to go for 4mm cable from MTTP solar controller to solar panels and from MTTP controller to 110ah leisure battery so i have learned that part.

So the part I'm stuck on is that people say for safety is to put a breaker switch between the solar panels and the MTTP controller but don't know what Amps it should be for a 4mm cable.

The other part is people say to put a Circuit Breaker Fuse between the MTTP controller and leisure battery but again i don't know what size fuse to buy for the 6mm cable.

I really would be grateful if someone could tell me those 2 fuse things i'm stuck on as this is my first motorhome and as i said i know cable sizes and fuses and just want to make sure i'm doing it right as don't want to anything wrong as i will have my 4 kids with me.

Thanks again

I have just installed a 100 watt solar panel on my campervan. I went for a hard mono one raised off the roof slightly. I had a semi flexible one on my caravan and it failed after 3 years.!

This time around I went for a Victron MPPT 100-20 amp controller that uses a Bluetooth VictronConnect app. I also used a Victron Smart Shunt battery monitor.
Cable used was 10 awg silicon covered that takes 200c

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Flexible-Soft-Silicone-Wire-Cable-10-12-14-16-18-2022-AWG-Red-Black-High-Quality-/222455634617?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

You would probably need a 30 amp one of these with 2 panels.

The one I used.
Victron, smart solar charge controller with built-in Bluetooth 75/10 75/15 100/15 100/20 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075NPQHQK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_50YC27EJQ717VZ3JQ9P2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

The one you would probably need.
Victron SmartSolar MPPT Charge Controller 100/30 12V / 24V Bluetooth Dongle Integrated SCC110030210 30A Solar Charge Controller https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073ZJ3L13/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_8DAZHC21JA2E5C1NVD46

Don't skimp on a controller.

With your 110 amp hour battery (standard or AGM) you can only safely use 55 amps of it and don't take the volts below 12.2 volts. You will most likely damage battery if you do.

I used 4mm cable on our 150w panel and I put a 60 amp trip switch between the solar panel and controller.

The trip amps isn't important because the solar panel could never produce enough amps to overload the cable, the trip is just used as an Isolator so I went for 60 amps 💪

The fuse between the battery and controller is important though because the battery is capable of delivering hundreds of amps in a short circuit condition. Ours (Votronic duo 250)has a 20a fuse built into the controller for that porpoise.

On your 200w system I'd fit a 25 amp fuse between controller and batteries, dont go too low with it because fuses get warm if they are near their full load.
Our 150w panel puts a maximum of 9.2 amps into the battery in full sun, yours will be about 11.7 amps 👍

Thanks for the replies, I have a list of items link below and if you could please tell me if i have everything right as i would really like to get items ordered and install them next week. Please tell me if i have the right items for a full install and if need anything else or need to change anything. Thanks very much for helping me out on this as i don't want to make a mistake plus just to be on the safe side i will get everything checked out by a qualified electrician before taking the kids on holiday.

2x 100w Poly solar panels (Will connect them in series, Told it's better)

110ah AGM leisure battery (Being charged by motorhome battery alternator)

20A Victron smart solar charge controller with built-in Bluetooth

25Amp fuse between controller and battery, is this high enough?: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Keenso-12V-24V-Fuseholder-Waterproof-Protection/dp/B07FDZ........

60Amp trip switch for between panels and controller, is this the right one? is it not too high? as the controller is on 20Amps. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Keenso-12V-24V-Fuseholder-Waterproof-Protection/dp/B07FDZ........

10 Feet 10AWG Solar Panel Extension Cable with MC4 Female and Male Connectors: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ANFIL-Solar-Extension-Connector-Adaptor-Multi/dp/B082Y9F4........

6mm2 cable for battery, hope it's ok as need to add lug ends for the battery, is it thick enough?: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Flexible-Soft-Silicone-Wire-Cable-10-12-14-16-18-2022-A........

Will the solar controller charge the main motorhome battery say at night while not driving and is it ok that the motorhome alternator charges the both batteries while driving as the solar panels will be charging as well, i just don't want the battery to over charge with both charging or will the solar controller stop charging when battery is full?

Please let me know if any of the items are wrong or if i need anything else that's missing to make a safe setup for my family. Thanks again

"2x 100w Poly solar panels (Will connect them in series, Told it's better)"

You were told wrong. Parallel is better for mobile applications because if one panel gets shaded the other one still works.

"110ah AGM leisure battery"

Up to you there, some people on MHfun have reported AGM have a short life when used as leisure batteries.. I'd go for gel for it's long life.

"20A Victron smart solar charge controller with built-in Bluetooth"

Again, up to you. Victron are a good make. I went for the Votronic Duo 250 because it has a gel charging profile and it also sends up to 1 amp to the starter battery to maintain it.

Yes that's exactly what I've got. You don't need a fuse at all between solar panel and controller, it's just to be used as a switch so the high rating is good.

Solar doesn't work at night so no it won't charge anything.

The alternator will be fine charging both batteries. Our Votronic controller backs off and lets the alternator do all the work. When the engine has been switched off 5 minutes it wakes up and it stops charging when the battery is full (that's why we fit them 😊)

60 amp is too high. 25 amp would be fine. I have not seen a 25 amp circuit breaker in 12v though and would like one myself. Your 25 amp link goes to a 60 amp one.

The solar controller only works in daylight. To charge on EHU, I purchased one of these.

Gel batteries can also be discharged lower without damage, as much as 80% discharged.
