Hi,

Can anyone recommend a 1500w or higher Pure Sine Wave Power Inverter, have been looking for days now and still no clue as so many to pick from. Would be grateful for your help and my budget is around £150. Thanks

Unable to help with recommendation.. but... how do you propose to power this inverter? If you wish to power it from 12V supply, this will need approx 150 Amps at full output - allowing for efficiency / losses. Not sure what sort of battery you will need, but it would need to be up to the job - probably a Li battery with a high discharge rate.

Forget gel batteries then... Unless you've got a few of them 🤔

Yep, that is a serious size inverter and will need a battery bank to get any serious usage if running at full tilt, do you really need 1,500watt capacity.

I run a mains kettle albeit small of a Aldi 300watt inverter, no problems and the inverter can do that on 12awg (4mm2) although I use 8awg (10mm2) cable at just 70cm length.

For a 1,500watt inverter your going to need 1awg (50mm2) for up to 1m run, and most would use 0awg (70mm2).

Personally for that kind of power I would be looking at a 24v or 48v inverter to significantly reduce the cable size required.

Just over a year ago I built a portable battery box, using a 12v 600watt PSW inverter and 120Ah SLA leisure battery, with Aili capacity monitor to ensure I don’t run the battery to below 50%.

Good luck with your project dave1976, if you are to go for a 1,500watt I believe the Giandel brand are good value and reliable and come with a remote switch which is a must if mounting in a caravan etc.

My 600watt inverter is by Mercury and has been in use for nearly 10 years, CPC at Preston do a Mercury 1000watt PSW for £250 but unfortunately there is no remote switch available.

For a budget of £150 I would take a gamble on Aliexpress you might just get lucky, but then again you could end up with an expensive door stop.

As i don't know anything about all this stuff i was just going by things i was seeing online. All i needed one for was to use a 24" tv (29watts) for a few hours at night and just for charging up phones and ipad but nothing else really. So do yous think 1500watts is far too much? what watts would should be high enough to power/charge those items? Thanks

Yep dave1976, the inverter that was in Aldi recently would have suited you perfectly 300watt although it is a Modulated Sine Wave, not quite as good as Pure Sine Wave, but a little bit better than a bog std Modified Sine Wave type.

The Aldi inverter states on the box that it is suitable for TV’s so you could always do a test and return it if not happy, Aldi stuff is usually well made and tested and comes with a 3 year warranty, which is pretty good for a £28 inverter, I have been happy with mine for powering my 300watt kettle, I just changed the supplied 12awg (4mm2) cable to 8awg (10mm2) as the original cables ran a little warm at full fit, whilst the 8awg 70 cm cable runs cool as a cucumber.

To be fair all of the stuff you mention can be powered from 12v not sure about your TV but if it runs of a brick converting mains ac to 12v or 24v etc, you can get regulated 12v step up transformers that give selectable V output, that will do that, I have one for my 21v laptop.

Thanks for the info, i will order that one from Aldi and see if it will run the tv and it does then saved myself a £120 thanks for that as i never thought about looking in Aldi's for one and plus the 3 year warranty is a big bonus. I have thick cable that i used a few years back when camping with i think was a 150w inverter and the cables are around 2cm thick and around 40cm long so maybe the same type 10mm2 cable you have. Well thanks again for all your help and look forward to trying the inverter from Aldi.

Yep dave1976, have a look in store before ordering online, that way you will save the £3 delivery charge, it was only a couple of weeks ago that they were in store so you may get lucky, also Lidl do a similar inverter, but I have not seen that in store ever.

If your getting into this sort of thing, it’s worth buying a decent crimp tool, I got one of the 10 ton Hydraulic tools of eBay last year £16 it was on a special, so they are more like £26 now, great bit of kit and does a crimp like it has come from a factory, forget soldering lugs on, that is a real pita.

The hydraulic crimp tool does lugs from 4mm2 all the way up to 70mm2 if not larger.

To be fair dave1976, I only used 10mm2 cable (slightly more heavy than 8awg) with my Aldi inverter as it was allI had in the workshop at the time, but it is HI-FLEX so super subtle and not to subtle like silicone cable, although at 70amp capacity it is a little overkill.

The cable that comes with the Aldi inverter is 12awg so 3.31mm2 so I will be getting some 6mm2 cable, I don’t think you can get HI-FLEX that small, so will be using some PVC cable, at 45amp capacity it is more than adequate for the max 27amp that my Aldi inverter is ever likely to draw.

Yep dave1976, the supplied 12awg cable that comes with the Aldi inverter is rated to 25amp which will be fine for most folk, apart from me, as my 300watt (220v) kettle pushes the Aldi inverter into the red at 320watt (230v), and I have measured the current at 27amp, using the supplied 12awg cable they did get a little warm which I was not comfortable with.

I have been into a few different Aldi’s and they do seem to have all gone, although I went into my local store on first day of release and they only had about 6 in stock, I nearly did not buy one as it was not “Pure Sine Wave” but as my only use was going to be with a kettle I guessed that it would be fine as it is a resistive load, I think it’s limit for inductive loads could be around 150watt, also the size got me, the thing is tiny compared to my 600watt inverter.

I do think the Aldi inverter is a well built unit, and the progressive cooling fan is a good indication of that, the posts take 5mm lugs in case you were wondering.

There is a bloke on YouTube “magic smoke” that has done some tear downs on Aldi/Lidl stuff, and I was hoping that he would cover the inverter, but has not done as yet.

The only other info I have found is a chap in Australia on YouTube they seem to have been selling the exact same inverter over there in Aldi stores at £32 (Aus $59.99 !).
