Hi all, new to the scene.
I purchased a 94 Talbot express Elddis van last year in desent condition off the one wife as her husband had passed away.
I knew I'd have a few upgrades to do but never realised I'd still be fixing issues a year later.
I'm sure the husbands spirit still resides in the van.
I've replaced all plumbing, tanks and pipe work as someone filled water tank with petrol.
I replaced most of the wiring, batteries , installed a new kitchen, sink and hob. Reupholstered seating, replaced blinds, flooring and repainted units. New starter, alternator, and tyres.
And have only used it for 1 weekend.,now I'm having problems with water heater a caver cascade 2. It starts up and ignites but turns itself off and shows red light.
Is it an easy fix or do I get an alternative.
I'm getting fed up with it at this stage...its a never ending saga, maybe it needs a priest not a technician...
Thanks in advance.

There should be 3 lights (red, amber and green). If the red is illuminated it means there is no gas coming through so you need to go through the easy steps first. Make sure that the gas bottle has gas in it. Make sure it's connected and switched on at the top. Have a look at the hot water tank as I believe there is an isolation valve adjacent to the tank on the floor so make sure that's in the right position. If all is okay try swapping the regulator for a new one and see if that works. However, if the amber light illuminates it means that there is gas coming through but the igniter has failed. Green means it's all working satisfactory.

Thanks tangos. Yes there's gas coming through as I have ignition and flame for 10 seconds and then fails and red light comes on.
Was thinking it maybe a dirty sensor or something..

Welcome to UKCS. We bought an elderly MH so I know what you’ve been up to.
Plenty of posts on that particular water heater if you use the Search tab. It’s not made any more. Ours stopped working on gas as that part was burnt out. Then we had to replace it when the external bung popped one winter so it wasn’t air tight any more.
You’ve done a lot yourself but you’ve not mentioned getting a Habitation Service done, which would confirm any water heater problems. It’s not that hard to replace it - the Henry is an exact copy but other models are available.

Hi fiona, thanks for your reply.
Trying to get anyone here in Dublin to do any work on the van is near impossible.
I've tried numerous gas technicians etc, even to get any mechanical work done is hard, nobody wants to know..
I do have some water ingress, I replaced the rear wall, hence replacing the kitchen units etc. I now will have to sort a spongey wall under the awning..Will probably need to get it under cover for that...more expense..
Hopefully I'll get there in the end...

I sympathise. I too had a talbot express (although bought new at the time) and had numerous problems with the Carver cascade.

As you have discovered, the gas will light but go out after 10secs because the flame has not been detected. It may be that the ignition probe is corroded and not totally within the flame. Note that the ignition circuit does not have a traditional thermocouple, but detects the 'ionisation' of the flame (ie the burning gas conducts electricity)

Most people give up on these old carvers and replace them with a 'Henry'.

Otherwise the van was reliable, but under-powered and thirsty.

I'm not sure the Henry's are available anymore but I believe Propex have introduced a new model that may fit

You're right! Didn't know that. My "go to" Leisureshopdirect (where we got the Henry from) says: NO LONGER AVAILABLE PLEASE SEE PROPEX HEATER 228471 AND ADAPTOR PLATE 269026 AS ALTERNATIVE .

Farther had a series one Talbot Express (Autohomes conversion). Little trouble with the water heater. The model Paloma would be recommended to be replaced as of an open flue type today. Burner assembly needs to be serviced as they can clog up. Thing is it could need checking for carbon monoxide emissions when repaired so best left to a technician. Trouble is hard to find one.

It might sound silly but have you checked that the vent cover is off outside? Our heater was doing the same until I realised that we had put the vent cover on over winter and hadn't taken it off before using the gas heater - just a thought :)

Yes, had cover off during testing...
I've ordered a new burner as suggested as old one looks a bit rusted, hopefully cure the problem...
