I have a 1996 fiat ducato based swift mondial with a 2ltr petrol engine. According to gov.uk I have to use E5 petrol as the new E10 isn’t suitable. I am already experiencing some difficulty obtaining the E5 at the pumps and I don’t want to be caught out where I’m desperate for fuel. Can someone please advise me 100% what to do if I can’t get E5 petrol when I’m away in the van as I do NOT want to damage my engine. Many thanks.

Use an ethanol protector additive such as Millers. Keep a bottle in vehicle for use if E5 is not available. This obviously an issue among classic car owners & there is plenty of info if you search online. Problem with E10 is the water content of the ethanol causing water vapour inside fuel lines etc.

Short term occasional use of E10 fuel will not cause any damage to your vehicle so if E5 fuel is not available for some reason, filling up with E10 for a while will not be a problem. I must say though that I have never found a problem with getting E5 fuel. I run my motorcycle on Super Unleaded and I have not yet found a garage that does not sell it. My petrol Land Rover also is not compatible with E10, but I will still run it on E10 as it does not cause damage to the actual engine. The ethanol in the fuel causes the rubber seals and hoses to deteriorate faster than with E5 fuel, also ethanol is hygroscopic so if fuel is stored for long periods of time it can absorb moisture that causes corrosion. I don't leave the vehicle idle for long enough for the fuel to absorb any water and as the seals and hoses deteriorate and need replacing, the newer replacements will be E10 compatible.

That is surprising, I thought all petrol stations sold super unleaded.

I believe the major retailers have E5 fuels available (but at a cost)
E.G. BP Ultimate, Shell V-Power etc.
Which is cheaper damaged engine or more expensive petrol?

Neither Asda nor Sainsbury here stock E5 anymore. Good advice above. Fill up with E10 if you are going to use it quickly, or dilute it with E5b as soon as you can. I personally believe this scaremongering to be mostly Government bullshine as other countries have been using up to E27 without problem.

There was a claim that the recent fuel shortage was part caused by the changeover.
Garages ran down their stocks of E5 so they could change their tanks over to E10.
Not sure if this was the case.

Thanks for your time and info everone. So if I understand this correctly I can use E10 if E5 isn’t available in the short term as long as I use it quite quickly and don’t let it sit in the tank too long or use an additive like millers if it’s going to be more permanent. Reassuring to know I can use this new crap short term until they move the 😡

Caveat - I’m not an expert.
I checked some ‘classic car’ websites. They all say that Super Unleaded petrol is E5 and it will be available for some years yet. Will cost more, obviously.
Otherwise, they say to change the things that will be damaged by prolonged use of E10, like fuel hoses, fibreglass petrol tanks etc. Sounds complicated to me, but maybe not if you’re a fixer-upper.

It’s very hard to get E5 near us. Most of the petrol stations have out of use signs on the super unleaded stuff. I assume they’ve been concentrating on E10 supplies following the recent fuel shortage.
