That's fine of course if you can afford to do that, but there are a lot of people who can't. I'm just glad I live well outside a LEZ as I certainly couldn't. Anything suitable for me, and likely to comply with the emission standards, would be well outside my price range. Probably at least double.
Any petrol car manufactured after 2005 qualifies. It’s only diesel cars that have to be more recent.
Quite. Has to be diesel for me as most suitable petrol models are too thirsty. I have a diesel X Trail, partly because of its carrying capacity in the back, partly because I tow a caravan, and partly because I need a car with a high driving position. I was starting to struggle getting out of my Volvo V70.
My car does an average of 35mpg over all, but with the petrol version I would be lucky to get 25mpg. Much worse when towing, whereas with my diesel there is little difference. I looked into petrol when I bought my car.

We had our Motorhome for 5 years , up to COVID we used it regularly , then we just never used it , we sorn it . You still have to insure it , have an mot , and service it .
Now this CAZ, We live slap bang in the areas where we would have to pay this £10 a day. Our Motorhome was 2010, we decided reluctantly to sell it , we advertised it free and sold it in 6 days we got what we paid for it which was good for us .
Now we have to decide what we do next , Caravan , static , or buy a camper van , but with COVID still here who knows when we will be able to get away like we did before COVID .
Does anyone know how this £10 a day will be paid , will it be annual, direct debit. ?

If you sorn a vehicle you don't legally have to insure it or mot it unless you are keeping it on the highway, if you aren't using it you don't need to service it.
It is probably best to insure a vehicle in case of theft.
You only pay to drive in a CAZ and you can pay online within the set timescale either before or after driving, up to 6 days after,if you don't pay in that time you will get a penalty charge notice.
The onus is on the driver/keeper to determine if they are or will drive in a CAZ.

I think I'm right in saying that if you sorn a vehicle you can't keep it on a public road anyway. It has to be taxed, insured and MOTd, even if you don't use it.

I wouldn't like to put that to the test in my part of the world! We regularly have camera equipped cars patrol the streets looking for untaxed/uninsured vehicles PARKED on the street. They are closely followed by clampers who clamp anyone not in compliance! (BTW I have no argument with that at all), I suspect simply having a non-complying vehicle on the street without having paid that day's CAZ fee would put you at risk - they have no way of knowing if you have or have not driven it that day and will likely err on the side of 'it's on the street' and the fee hasn't been paid! These schemes are as much about revenue raising as they are about compliance, my local council are absolutely ruthless about enforcement of anything they control with no latitude for the most minor 'technical' infringement (overhang a yellow line by a millimetre you'll get a ticket!), they raise multi-£m's with their enforcements!

ANPR cameras record which vehicles have been driven into a CAZ not mobile units.
If a vehicle is untaxed or uninsured that is a different matter and they shouldn't be on the public roads parked or otherwise.
From Birmingham city CAZ:
Parking in the Clean Air Zone
Your vehicle is only chargeable when in motion. The ANPR cameras record vehicles when they are moving, so you would receive a charge for each individual day the vehicle in question is picked up by the cameras. Therefore if you drive into the zone on a Monday, leave your vehicle parked up all week and exit on a Friday, you would only be required to pay the charge for Monday and Friday (not Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

We assume you would set up an account to pay the fees, similar to the Dartford crossing account.

I suppose one good thing will be the falling birth rate. If you drive to your girlfriends house in the zone and stay overnight, you will have to pay for going there in the evening and pay again for driving back home in the morning.

Hi Colin couldn't agree more. about money not the environment regards Terry
Yes indeed, how is it ok if you are able to, and prepared to pay? It simply discriminates against those least able to pay whilst doing nothing for the environment. Often those discriminated against in this way are low-paid but essential workers, who are more needed to be there than anyone else.

City Hall has today published new data showing dramatic improvements in London's air quality across the capital since 2016!
It's not about improving the environment as a whole it is about improving the air quality within the city.
Some CAZs don't charge low paid workers who live/work within the zone, some don't charge for private vehicles at least one offers financial help to upgrade from a non compliant vehicle.
