I know everyone on here is a law abiding and respectful camper, so this is just for information. The National Trust for Scotland were really upset the other day at finding five "heavy vehicles" with roof top tents parked off road at Glen Etive. The outdoor code does not permit vehicles to leave roads and laybys without the landowners permission. This is not wild camping, where you must carry all equipment yourself, and on foot. They would like everyone to make themselves aware of the code, to prevent damage to wild areas never intended for traffic. I hope this is helpful.[URL=https://news.stv.tv/highlands-islands/campers-blasted-for-parking-fleet-of-4x4s-at-highland-beauty-spot?top]
Thanks for posting, and reminding us of a topic that crops up regularly. As you say, “wild camping” doesn’t apply to vehicles in the legislation, but it’s become a handy (and romantic?) shorthand term for parking somewhere overnight for free.
The key word in the legislation is “responsible”: MHs can park up discreetly overnight and as long as they don’t block access, go onto private land, leave absolutely nothing behind etc, there’s usually no problem.
There are different issues at Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park, as you’ll know - the requirement for a permit.
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Thanks for that link. A group of 4x4s all with roof tents sounds like an organised trip to me, with a leader who knows where to go. When I Googled it, I was surprised to find there are almost half a dozen firms in Scotland hiring Land Rovers with roof tents.
They appear to be supplied with portable toilets, so let’s hope only the tyre damage is left behind.
