Hi, We are new to this site and have a couple of questions.

We have an F-reg petrol 2ltr Ford Transit conversion and travelled all over in it, but the tappets tap very loudly now (100,000 miles) and I might replace it for the summer.

Can I get the tappets to stop tapping loudly or do I replace them (expensive I know)?

Otherwise, I have only 400 quid to buy another van and we are desperate to travel some of the UK for a couple of months this year.

Do you know of any vans(not Ford escort type) or maybe a Toyota Space cruiser type that is available for 400? with at least 2 months MOT and maybe Tax for a month.

I am talking about just a van, hopefully near the West Country (Taunton)

Any help will be very appreciated

Mark and Jan

Have you tried flushing the engine and then replacing the oil with synthetic oil to try to cure the problem?

Tappets can tap loudly when the vehicle is not used for periods of time because the oil drains away and leaves the oil pump partially dry. As the tappets are located at the top of the engine it can take a while for the pressure to build and the oil to reach there.

hi mark n jan .................there is a cheap temp cure to this,go to the breakers yard and get your self a set of cam followers and ball head bolts,..............and a brand new cam shaft spray bar from the ford dealer..............if your not mechaniclly minded you will need a haynes book for your van, remove old spray bar and bin it,loosen all ball nuts and remove cam followers be careful of sharp edges on cam,fit replacements, i adjust clearence simply by pointing each cam lobe in turn to 6 oclock and  setting with feeler gauges, change the oil n filter ,its a temp way of quienting it down for a while, other options are a known good complete head,or new cam shaft kit, if you want a complete unleaded 2000cc engine cheap let me know as i have just replaced a petrol engine for a 2.5 di on k plate transit and the lumpcwas good it has carb ,etc with it,its not a hard job to change petrol to petrol at all 7unfortanly the ford pinto lump does suffer with spray bars blocking wearing away cam and cam followers and of course not many people adjust them now and again , very best wishes billy in brum..............remember following the first option is only a temp measure :-)

Thanks all, I'll try Coles Commercials.

I'll also do the engine flush and yes it's been sitting for around 4 months waiting for the sunshine.

I might buy another van.
