My wife and I are nearly 73, and I have had to scale back too. I have minimised driving in the hours of darkness and I don't drive as far from home as I would once have done. Whereas I would once have thought nothing of doing 300 miles in a day and often drove more than 400 miles in a day, now I don't often do more than 150 miles. I can still pass the medical to drive diesel trains on a heritage railway, but the line is only 7 miles long and the maximum speed is 25mph. I used to drive mainline express trains, but no more. I also used to drive coaches all over Britain, but now I'm restricted to 3.5 tons, as I'm over 70. I could still take a medical and renew my PSV licence, and I do sometimes think I should, but would I use it? I no longer have my CPC though, so it's unlikely.
It comes to us all unfortunately. I will carry on driving my car, and I will carry on towing my caravan for as long as I can, but they are probably my last car and caravan. Like me they are getting old. Maybe one day in the not too distant future I will have to stop driving and maybe I'll start going on coach trips as a passenger. It won't be the same but if the alternative is staying at home all the time, I'll take that option.
------------- Best Regards,
Colin

Having recently become a member of the grand order of octogenarians, I have to agree we others who can not drive the distances we once did. Last year we limited ourselves to sites we could reach in no more than a 3 hour drive.
We realise that we must make the most of our caravan in the next few years as clearly we will have to stop sometime. Not so difficult driving without the caravan, so we may have to seek alternatives eventually.
On another topic, I have been meaning to ask you Colin21, I note you drive on one of the heritage railways, but have you ever taken the Wolsztyn Experience in Poland?

OH won't tow for more than 80 miles, so we always stay somewhere for 2 nights en route, or touring around, and make that part of the holiday.

I haven't unfortunately, but I'd love to. I have ridden on "our" steam engines occasionally but I am only qualified to drive what I drove on B.R. which was diesel and electrics. Ironic, but I was too young to drive steam on the mainline and I'm now too old to drive it on Heritage Railways. I could cope with the driving, but I'm not so sure about the oiling up and the firing, I don't think my dodgy back would let me.

We used to love touring around but now we prefer to set up once, stay the week or more, then go home. I'd rather drive 150 miles and set up once than do two lots of 80 miles and have to set up twice. Each to their own I suppose. If I wanted to tour these days, I think I would opt for a motorhome. Can't afford one though anyway.
