Good afternoon,

Having been away from the camping world for a couple of years due to losing my OH, I am shortly to take delivery of a 2004 Romahome Dimension which does not have a gas bottle. I am informed by the dealer that I need to get a campingaz 907 which is butane but as I wish to camp in the cooler months, wonder if there is a propane alternative which will fit the van. Any help appreciated. Apologies if this has been covered before.

I don't know for sure but I would have thought a Calor 3.9 kg propane bottle would fit, I suggest you wait until you get it and measure the gas locker. I think I have seen somewhere that it will hold 2 X 3.9kg bottles but again I don't know for sure.

I am so sorry for your loss and it's nice to see that you are getting back out there again.

Tina

Thank you, I will certainly do that. I can't wait to get back on the road, I do miss it, but won't be the same without OH,

Assuming your 'dimension' is essentially the same as my R30, The gas locker is designed to take two 3.9 kg Calor Propane bottles. Calor is available in the UK but Campingaz is also available on the continent. It is much more expensive. Not sure about the Dimension, but the R30 has a bulkhead regulator that is designed for propane, so the connectors etc.. would not fit a Campingaz bottle.
Best have two 3.9 calor bottles and use one at a time, being sure to refil the empty one as soon as practical.

( The R30 is simply the later version of the Dimension on a newer base.)

Can't advise on what cylinders will fit your camper, but unless you want to tour Europe (where Campingaz refills are widely obtainable, and other UK cylinders not at all!) would strongly advise NOT to get a Campingaz 907 if at all possible. As you point out it's Butane so only suitable for summer use, but it's obscenely expensive compared to other brands of gas, and a rather small gas quantity (only 2.75Kg) that can be quickly exhausted if used for water/space heating in a camper as opposed to just a cooking hob.

Calor have had horrendous supply issues over past couple of years, where some cylinders/refills in some parts of the country are all but unobtainable. Worth considering getting a FloGas 3.9Kg Propane instead of Calor, as refill supply seems to be more reliable, the cylinders are the same size, BUT the couplings are different.

Really worth shopping around on Fleabay, FB Marketplace, local classified ads etc. to pick up a s/h cylinder (or 2) for a few pounds rather than pay the hefty new rental charge from Calor/Flowgas! You don't have to worry about the safety of the cylinder, you only want it to exchange for a fresh refill, most on sale are empty, so long as it's fit for exchange that's all you need consider.

In my area a few caravan dealers have switched from Calor to Flogas as Calor was difficult to obtain. However, some places like builders merchants keep Calor cylinders as they are used by plumbers etc..
