Can anyone help with a head versus heart decision??

We've approached that time of life when tent camping is becoming too much effort...packing, pitching the tent in the rain etc and we are about to buy a camper/motor home.

We're a family of four, two boys ages 13 and 14.

Looking at Talbots. Couple of options have come up for us. Either a 2.0 petrol Eldis Auto quest 270 or 2.5 deisel Autosleeper Talisman.

Both are very early 1990s- almost classics??!

Anything newer is probably not affordable to us.

We are really liking the flexible seating/sleeping arrangements in the Talisman and the fact it's an Autosleeper which I think is lovely quality conversion but should the fact it's deisel scare me off??

Also maybe the fact that the Autoquest is that bit slightly smaller may be a good thing for a 1st motor home??

My heart is saying Autosleeper Talisman but my head Autoquest 270!

Can anyone advise me of any pointers or pitfalls to be aware of with either of these motor homes?

I have heard that the petrol would be much cheaper for repairs. Can anyone give me a point in the right direction??

Welcome to UKCS. There are fewer petrol models than diesel, their mpg is less & the older ones have to use the more expensive petrol. When we part X’d our L-reg Autosleeper Clubman it had over 100K on the clock and the VW T4 diesel engine was (according to our mechanic), still running in; it did 30mpg.
With an older vehicle, look out for rust. And be aware you won’t be able to go into cities with Low Emission Zones.
Motorhomes & Campervans are still selling quickly and for a premium, since lockdown made staycations popular & new vehicles are held up by part shortages. Whatever you buy, you’ll make great memories with your family, even if you sell it after a couple of years.

I would go for the autosleeper, the 2.5 diesel should give you 10-12 mpg more than the Talbot (depending on driving style). Also, the Autosleeper is mostly fibre-glass and less likely to suffer from leaks (past or future).

Regarding maintenance and repair, both vehicles are of an age prior to most of the faffy electronics of later models, doubt there is much difference in costs. As has been mentioned, rust is the killer. Don't just fall in love with the interior, because without the vehicle it's going nowhere.

In addition to rust, damp is also a killer, if either of them smell damp, have signs of damp or mould I would be going elsewhere!

My first new motorhome was a Talbot 2.0 petrol Autohomes. Although it was very reliable, it had no power steering, the world's worst gear change and was very thirsty.

So may I recommend that you go for a diesel with power steering - preferably not a Talbot.

Thank you each for you input and good advice. Unfortunately when we went (with high hopes) to see the Talisman Autosleeper as soon as we stepped in we were hit by a wall of unmistakable damp smell!
Generally the condition just wasn't as described and I could not believe the chunks of rust rot literally dropping before my eyes from the edges of the cab doors.
I made the mistake of mentioning to the seller "it smells a touch damp?" To which I got a very sharp dressing down "no it doesn't, its impossible for these to get damp"
we tried politely say its just not the condition we had hoped for and we made a swift exit to the nearest cafe for a coffee. Dissapointing it looked so promising in the photos.

We also got to see a nice Highwayman, well nice on the outside but very rough and ready on the inside (but it was definitely dry, no damp smell at all) just dissapoingly there were chunks knocked out out of the corners of the cabinetry and wall to ceiling glitzy marble effect plastic sheeting with chrome effect trimming and ultra bright led lights was all a bit much for me!

Would have been expensive and time consuming to get her back to original character.

Seeing the Talisman and Highwayman did help inform our thinking though about what really would suit us at this stage and it made us realise that we'd actually prefer a down size to a smaller campervan rather than a motor home (for now anyway)

The Chap selling the Talbot Highwayman kindly let me drive for quite a way on farm track and open road. Made me realise how spoiled we have become with easy to drive modern motors! But it kind of made me like the old school retroness of the Talbots so now we are seriously thinking about one of those Rambler or Avalon type of campers.

I would like you to continue to seek advice before shelling out your dosh. We have had three new M.H. since 2008. We looked, we searched and had our wrong heads on for the first one. We went for an Elddis because of the space it offered. It was super, but it had a but. NOT enough seat belts for the passengers it was designed for. ie four people. It had the sleeping for four though. So as you are 4 people, make sure it has 4 seat belts. A lot of older ones do not. We are only 2 up most of the time, but the age of your young ones would have to have seats with belts. That is the law. Also they should be front facing. That was in 2008.
Move forward to 2011 and that seating restriction was a problem. So we went for new Autosleeper. Four seatbelts and the two in the rear were forward facing. Come 2016 we were a bit fed up driving around in a 'country cottage' beautiful, well made as she was. So we were on the look out for a spacious 4 belter that was easily rearranged to provide good sleeping arrangements.
In 2016 we were on the loose again for a new one. Autotrail she turned out to be. Looked at a show, found her, then asked our dealer to get us one. They did, and boyo boy has she been the one we should have had in 2008. I know the excitement, we felt it with all three. Stand back, think and decide with your head, not your heart. 2016, the third one and she is the bees knees. Mostly because of the ease of making up the beds, but she has not put a step wrong for us. Mostly it is only two of us, but we do take a third every now and again.
You have a good look around for just what you want. Spend your time now, not your money. It is almost the end of UK motor homing. Save, search, look at everything as 'local' as you can get. If you look at local dealers, and finding what you think you would like, go see it. Remember head not heart. I wish you well.

Sorry that you've been disappointed by what you've seen so far. I've had similar experiences when looking for vans. Even on vans like the Talisman, you can get water ingress round windows, rooflights etc..

I ended up paying more than I had budgeted for when buying my current van, but after 9 years, similar models are selling for more than I paid!

That's great! Just shows how a well chosen, well looked after van holds its value well or as in your case can appreciate in value!

Well this is what we just got ourselves...

https://www.gumtree.com/p/campervans-motorhomes/talbot-express-camper-van-1000-p-1993-1971-cc-/1445092077

I may live to regret going against the advice not to get a Talbot and also its petrol but we liked the gentleman selling it he and his wife loved her for 10 yrs.

It was local and didn't smell musty or damp at all but some rust at the back wheel arches. Seemed OK underneath though.

Yes it's small for our wee family of four but we are used to camping in a tent so we thought it can't be worse than that?

I gather there is a serious emissions fail on the Mot so I'll have to get that sorted ASAP.

I paid 3,200 GBP so time will soon tell if that was a good investment or not... ??

I tried to look, but the ad has gone.
Well, you didn't pay a king's ransome, so even with some costs, you should be OK.   As I said, my van was very reliable, but thirsty and under-powered. Still, it took us round Europe and the UK including the Western Isles of Scotland. The gear change was terrible, but this could be improved with careful adjustment. If it hasn't been done, change the interior light fittings for LED ones. That will save a lot of battery power.

As you can see from my profile (Don't forget to add your van and location to your profile. It helps when replying) I've got a Romahome R30. Absolutely superb van. It has 4 seats, but only 2 berth. (Kids have grown & flown)
