Topic: Which A Frame ?

We are expecting delivery of our new motorhome within the next month and have already changed our small runaround car for a Abarth 595 to have converted to a fully braked A frame system.
We saw a few companies like TowMaster and Tow A Frame at the NEC which all seem to offer the ideal solutions , at very similar cost .
We will be occasionally towing the small car to U.K. destinations that we know will be useful having it with us like Cornwall etc.
Can anyone who currently tows a small car with one of the above systems give any opinions / thoughts for which one to choose ?

I used to use one for my rv and car and had no problems with it but that was many years ago and i believe that the new ones are much lighter than the older versions. it was a tow-a-car one. I used it to tow a renault kangoo. Make sure that whichever make you go for has a removeable jockey wheel. really helpful if you are connecting - disconnecting on your own

Hi Chatterdog , the two I mentioned are quite light and don’t have a jockey wheel.
It was their ease of connection / disconnection that I like and both can be easily stored in the boot.
Just not sure if one has any major advantages over the other ?

If you are on Facebook there is a motorhome and A frame group which before you buy one makes for interesting reading.
Ours is a towtal, does the job, not overly impressed with quality of workmanship, when times comes to sell car with frame, probably have a look at a TAF chesterfield one. The frame is chinky but fits a C1 boot easily enough.

I see you have done, are doing your homework for the best available. It is more than sensible to ask others for their opinions also. Just one thing to remember... you are not legal in the EU. Lots of people will say differently, but please read up on it. My brother in law drives his lorry into E.U at least 3 times a week. (he is a M.H. owner and has been for years) He takes his M.H for holidays all over EU and never has a problem. He does NOT tow a car. But he does see when in the lorry and the M.H, police taking towed cars off of those who are unaware that they are not legal. This mostly happens when just a few miles away from getting off the ferry. You have not said you would go abroad towing a car but it is something we all should be aware of. We have a M.Home and I would not consider towing a car here, or abroad, we do have a bike rack though.

Hi Austins, it is for the U.K. touring. We have been caravaners for 30 years and tour U.K. and Europe a lot.
I want the mobility of having a car in the U.K., we go to places regularly in U.K. in Autumn and Winter like Cornwall , Wales and Scotland where the weather for bikes is not the best.
We are changing to a MH because we want to tour further afield in in Europe and do shorter stays before
Moving on than 7-10 days stops.
We have spoken to many people however on forums and sites who tow small cars into Europe and it seems they generally have not t had a problem other than places like Spain and Greece?
If I was to do a longer break in one location in the EU , I may consider on more research taking the car to France on occasions?
From reading some Forums, it seems many people have towed a car for years in the EU without a problem.
A question I have not been able to get an answer for, is if towing a car on a modern electronically braked A frame assembly is not allowed in the EU , why are they not stopped at the Ferry or Tunnel crossings entering France? The authorities at point of departure and entry, see every Motorhome going through and could easily insist on removal?
Is it less frowned upon in France , I do not know the answer?

If your intending to tow on an A-frame in France thats entirely your decision however if your intending using free aires please dont take up two spaces with your towcar as you would denying someone an overnight pitch

Dave 11, I don't have the answer to drive or not to drive with an A Frame. I just know what I am told by said brother in law.
I could maybe guess? They certainly leave UK.
Could be a different? or new type? of A frame and when stopped they are allowed or not to carry on with their journey. I believe my B.I.Law, he drives thousands of miles. Got his tickets for Spanish G.P. Motorbikes, one year. Not something I would do myself. I just passed on what is seen. Now I will read up on it.
