Hi all this is getting really serious all i wanted to do was fit a relay to charge my leisure battery but it is all getting very confusing other people do it why not me?
Nice to see you back on line again ( George Telford) with your worthy comments I hope your other problems are getting smaller by the day good luck.
by all means fit a relay, I only post facts to help people make a decision if you can survive on very very few amps per day, a split charge relay can supply that, if you want to be able to use say 55 ah from a 110 ah battery, a split charge relay is the worst thing you can do.
If you are a hook up site walla then it wont make any difference, if you need to use the battery for wild camping a split charge relay is naff.
In the diagram as shown the leisure battery will always be partly discharged. The alternator senses the voltage of the starter battery, and regulates the charge rate accordingly. The second battery will always be at a percentage of the main battery dependant on the circuit resistance I.E wire thickness, relay resistance, connections and fuses acting as chokes,
The alternator senses both battery voltages, unless a diode splitter is used, even if there were no resistances from the wiring neither battery will ever achieve more than 70% of fully charged.
I also have a abbey gt caravan which everything runs of 12volt except fridge which can run of gas and electric also---- but it has a battery charger as well --we need 12volt so we must need a relay for charging leisure battery as most things run on 12volt-----------
Got to admit, i only looked in cos SNERT had posted, Stuart you've been quiet for a while, funnily enough this thread is relevant to some queries we have but i'm tired now so will look again tomorrow.
George, i agree with Brian , nice to see you posting here, you've been a help to us in the past ref batteries, have a new question for you tomorrow, sorry but can't continue reading your thread 'cos it's so sad but have fingers crossed for you.
Has anyone had experience or can comment on the Sterling Alternator to Battery Charger? . It claims to "increase the output performance of your alternator".
Reading this post im a little confused on what the best solution is when camping wild, charge your leisure batteries whilst on a site then use them for the following days?
