We are just getting started on our camping adventures as was after some advice.
We have a camper van with electric hook up so can get power into there, but we sleep in a 6 man family tent. Was wondering best was to take the chill out of tent. Could I run a suitable extension (outdoor) from the 240 sockets in camper into tent to put in an electric heater.
I have a little basic knowledge and know I have to be careful at how much power I’m drawing at one time, or am I being silly and not thinking of a better way around this?
Also any recommendations on how people warm up their tents.
Thanks.

Welcome to UKCS!

Thinking aloud, and I hope the experts like saxo will come and offer his advice soon!

Assuming you can only hook up to one of the EHU sockets on a post, I would hook that up to an EHU lead with multiple sockets, so that you can run off a fan heater and other electrical appliances, including the van.

I am assuming there is no big heating elements such as an electric kettle/oven/cooker/induction hob in the van, just a fridge/freezer and lighting, and is protected by its own RCD unit.

This is what I would get and do if I were to start afresh.

Get one of these to hook up to the site EHU supply and keep the roller part inside the tent:

Get one of these to hook up the van from the roller unit using the 3-pin plug and one of the 3-pin sockets on the roller unit:

Alternatively, use a combination of these two to hook up the roller unit to your van (this is what I use to hook up my van to the external socket in my garden while she is parked outside the house):

Please bear in mind I am not a sparky, just thinking aloud. Hopefully, the experts like saxo will come along to offer their advice soon.

It depends if you have to power both the van and the tent at the same time.
If you do, then you would probably take power from a van socket so that it is protected by the unit in the van. If you connect the tent directly to the ECU post, then you will want a lead such as the 'roller' with a circuit breaker for safety.

As for power, a 1 kw appliance will draw approx 4.5 amps.

you can use an extention lead into the tent from the van, however you do run risk of forgetting the heater is on and then its highly likely you would say put the kettle on in the van which would pop the breaker on the post. the only real way of getting around this is to remember to pull the plug out from in the van while boiling the kettle and not relying on someone not just feeling a bit chilly and turning the heating on in the tent as and when they feel like it, so use a single socket in the van that way you can only plug one thing in at a time

Check on site. Some do not allow heating in tents and awnings,

Hi Dk,

Thanks for all the information.

I already have the bottom 2 for when the camper is at home hooked up to socket in garage. So will use this from site hook up to van? I currently leave it plugged in on a smart charger so leisure battery fully charged. Is this right thing to do?

My thinking was to buy something like you first mentioned the roller unit. And plug into van socket and run to tent? If this is main plugged?
Are you saying it’s better to do it the opposite way round. Which would mean buying more than one lead.

Van has own rcd yes. And just fridge and lighting in there.

Obviously I would have to work out how much power I would be using but you think I would have enough to run a 800w heater and fridge? Think the fridge is connected to 240v leisure battery. so would keep smart charger on at camp site to always keep fridge running?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, all very new to this?

Thanks. Joe.

Thanks. Ideally have both powered at same time as would like fridge to be on all the time. Was think this was my way of doing it just wanted to check. So will run an extension from vans 240 socket into tent and run heater off that. Just making sure to turn off heater if I want to use other electrical items.

You’re using the tent like a drive-away awning, I think. Be aware that some sites charge for awnings, others don’t. Like some charge per person, some per pitch. Some may limit the overall footprint too; varies greatly.
Anyway, adventures await!

The way I look at this is no different to having a caravan with an external 3 pin socket (on the awning side) whereby you can plug in an electric heater providing it is fused at the plug with a 13 amp fuse. The 3 pin socket is protected by the RCD so it should be safe to proceed using an electric heater in a tent. However, some common sense needs to be applied because an electric heater will draw more current therefore you have to limit the amount of other electrical appliances to have switched on simultaneously which having said that, using low wattage appliances will benefit substantially due to the fact that they reduce the amount of power consumed. If you do have a low wattage kettle you could use it whilst the electric heater is switched on but that all depends on the power output of the site electrics at the bollard. 16 amps. should be able to cope but 10 amps. or less could prove to be somewhat difficult. We have an electric heater but ours was purchased from a camping outlet which is designed for camping purposes producing less killowatts than a domestic electric heater which would be more practical for use in a tent.
There are several factors to be taken into account so it's not a simple answer of yes or no, but by using the right dedicated electrical appliances for the task will help.

Hi, thanks for all the replies.

We are using a family tent to all sleep/have extra space in, as we don’t all fit in the camper and not an awning.
Going camping at Easter so just wanted a way to take chill out of tent.
To be honest we don’t have any electrical appliances as of yet. (Kettle is on gas hob)
Just chargers for phones.
Only thing that will be using the electrical power is the smart charger for leisure battery (which is keeping it charged for lights and fridge in camper.
Now just to find a suitable electrical low power heater to use.
Thanks.

And whatever system you end up with make sure that you completely unroll the cable before use.

Apologies in not responding soon as I have had a busy weekend away from base, and I needed to double check the male-female connections on my van before I responded further.

My suggestion was for the following:

1. Get an EHU roller unit as suggested and hook that up to the site EHU at the bollard and keep the roller unit inside the tent. The roller unit will have a male IP44 connector to hook up to the female IP44 connector at the bollard.
2. Use your existing 3-pin to IP44 adaptor with a female IP44 connector along with your IP44 EHU cable, and use one of the 3-pin socket on your roller unit to hook up to your van which should have an IP44 male connector.

The issue I can foresee is that the 15m cable on the roller unit might not be long enough, and you may need an additional IP44 extension lead.

The roller unit is designed for using in a tent and only has one IP44 connector which is male for hooking up to the site EHU at the bollard.

You will need to add some sort of a cable (or a combination of a 3-pin-IP44 adaptor and a cable with one each of male and female IP44 connector at each end) to connect the roller unit to your van.

The alternative of hooking up the van to the site's EHU supply at the bollard then run a roller unit from one of your van's 3-pin/240V socket into the tent is also doable; however, it would mean a cable coming out of a window or the door of the van; unless you have a suitable external 3-pin/240V on your van that offers protection against the elements especially water ingress due to heavy rain in windy condition.

Please bear in mind I am not an expert on electrical issues, just thinking aloud based on my own camping experience in a tent and now in a van.

DK
