Hi guys I am buying a new Motorhome I am selling my caravan and buying a brand new Motorhome I’m not sure if I’m really doing the right thing but I think it’s right. Has anyone also moved from a caravan to MH ? Was it right ? Also if paying circa £100k what discoun5 should I expect with haggling ? And if your good at this what’s the best strategy to deploy

We changed from a caravan to a motorhome in 2013 until we sold up earlier this year. I assume you have done your research on whether a motorhome is the best option for you. If the conclusion is yes then go ahead. In terms of cost it seems that there are a lot of discounts on new motorhomes, especially 2023/24 models and you might expect a discount of perhaps 10% on the list price. Obviously it depend which model you are interested in but its a question of shopping around. You might like to watch this video on YouTube which has some useful info on prices https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHInB2Ro60E

£100K is a helluva lot of money. We got a new MH for much less back in 2018 & it was a big gulp, we got a discount then because it was a 2016 unregistered model that the dealer needed to get rid of.
I’d say - don’t expect any discounts unless it’s a similarly older new model. It’s still a seller’s market. The dealer doesn’t need to give you a discount, they know you won’t go anywhere else & you do, there’s someone else waiting.

Wait until after the budget and then decide whether a motor caravan is the way forward.

Do we think the budget might change things ? Perhaps VAT. Prob is MH new are now 70-100 and a class start at 110 a 2 year old mh of the one I’m looking at is 85 and 95-100 new. I’m thinking if I buy one now it will last me 15 years and still have only 45k on the clock but if I wait the prices in 5 years could be even higher

We have had caravans for over 50 years and during that time have looked at motorhomes. Cost was not a factor but each time after looking at the pluses and minuses of one, found the minuses outnumbered the pluses, and continued with caravans. With a motorhome there are parking problems if you want to leave sites for day out. Where with caravan you have use of car, If you think i will tow car behind it, need braked A frame. But you will only get away with this at home. If you intend to go abroad you will need to buy a trailer and put car on that. And if towing car or trailer, may as well stick with the convenience of a caravan. As said spending that amount of money could be a costly mistake as if you decide not for you, there will be a large financial loss. Presently dealers are giving large discounts to try and get rid of stock.

Not had caravans for quite as long, but no way would I have a motorhome. Where do you plan to keep it? Two lots of tax and insurance, assuming you also have a car. If no car, then you have to use public transport from sites, and there is not always a handy bus.

We went from caravans to motorhomes. On our 4th now and just decided on our near perfect layout. So, my advice? Don't buy new...hire one with the layout you *think* you like and try it, or several layouts first before commiting. Go and look at plenty, some good nearly new vans out there, plus any niggles should have been dealt with.

We also tow a car as like to get out and about and as others said not always a bus handy. It all depends on whether you plan to move on every couple of days or stay put like you would in a caravan.

Personally, for us a car and caravan would make more sense when away, but stored at home the MH is perfect as we can soon move it and be away and we don't always take the car - depends on where, when and how long we are away.

We were thinking of travelling around the uk from place to place 2 x electric bikes in the back so could get to shops pretty easy and during the winter travel through France to Spain and stay down there for 12 weeks when it’s warmer than uk apart from benefits of quick set ups etc I could drive it to my house easier than the caravan as it would go on my just just! I’d be able to keep it in storage and bring it back as it’s only 5 mins away and clean it, it heat through it. It just seems more easier as I get older and also the added safety against towing etc

Also bear in mind that at age 70 if it is over 3500 kg you will have to retain your C license with medical proof presuming you already have C on your present license. If not and it is over 3500 kg you would need to obtain licence. I have mentioned this as at £100,000 May well be over 3500 kg as the ones we have looked at with a limit of 3500kg were in the £70,000 bracket.. I am in my Eighties and still tow caravan, often up to 300 miles a day and think nothing of it. My friend up into his Eighties towed his caravan down to Spain each winter for 3 to 4 months until sadly passing away.

What puts us off getting a new MH now is the horrendous road tax for the first few years.
We keep our MH where some people keep their caravan: outside the house. It’s pretty much the same length as the Škoda, so parking in towns isn’t a problem. We unplug & leave the site for the day if there’s no local bus, but our usual pattern is - leisurely drive to site A via several points of interest (garden, castle, beach or forest for dog walk, round of golf etc), stay 2-3 nights & walk or bus locally, then move on to site B via POIs, in a big circuit back to home. The beauty of a MH is you drive up, plug in & that’s it - 10 minutes after you arrive, you’ve got the tea or G&T to hand.
Thankfully MH or caravan or TT or tent - there’s something to suit everyone, it might change as circumstances change.

Horses for courses as they say. We couldn't afford even the cheapest of motorhomes, but if we could I'm not sure that we would have one. We have looked into it. The conclusion we came to was that if you like to move on every couple of days then a motorhome is probably the better bet, but if you like to stay on a site for a week or more then a caravan is better. Once set up on a site, if we want to go out we just jump in the car and go. No messing around stowing things so that they don't fly around and we know the car fits in any normal parking bay. It also goes under any height barriers on car parks etc.

The other issue is that if you have a motorhome that is large enough to be comfortable, we are both in our 70s, it would be far too big for everyday running around back home. We would need another vehicle, which would mean two lots of tax and insurance. We can keep our caravan, which is only quite small but plenty big enough, at the front of the house along with the car, but a large enough motorhome would need to go into storage, and that is very expensive around here as well as being very difficult to find.

Best Regards,
Colin

We have a car park in front of the garage block for 6 houses, plenty of room for a caravan but not sure what the neighbours would think of a motorhome. If we ever buy one it would have to have the same amount of space inside as our 4 berth caravan.

Ours is a 4 berth caravan, but at 19'4" overall length it is the biggest we could keep at home. Any longer would stick out over the pavement. A more modern 4 berth caravan would almost certainly be bigger, and a motorhome with the same internal space definitely would.

Someone mentioned the horrendous road tax for a few years… what do you mean ? Is this because it’s over £40k new so the road tax is £600 instead of £190 ?
