Just a quick hello and have found viewing the posts interesting.Do not own a campervan yet!We are hiring one for the first week in July and are going up the west coast of Scotland. The two ladies in my life have not enjoyed camping hence a compromise.I am a hillwalker so wildcamped in many places. We live near Loch Lomond so not going very far on our first adventure. We have got a Sundance 630l 6berth.Only 3 of us but got it at 4berth price.Really looking forward to it and any tips or advice welcome asap.Remember first time out and have no idea what to expect. Also any advice on campsites up the west coast welcome. Thanks Dave

have a good trip and i guess the first thing to say would be check out the van before you leave and if you are not sure of anthing get the hire people to go though it again. when we collected our first motorhome a few years ago the hand over took about 2 hours as he showed us how everything worked - and they had less gadgets than the vans do now. make sure everything is secure before you drive off eg fridge catches are locked so door does not fly open and nothing is left up high such as tvs radios etc which could down on someones head. also check what is included in the hire price, do you  have to supply own bedding pillows etc.cannot really help on camp sites but check out internet, which i guess you have done, or have a look in local libary under travel and you may find a site guide you can borrow or at least look at in the libary.

Hi terrier,

I've no specific advice to offer, just take your time and enjoy yourselves. In your neck of the woods you should be able to find a wide range of wild-camp spots, but you would need to use camp sites occasionally just to top up your water, empty the loo e.t.c. (wild camping is the best fun)

Take a look at my gallery, should make you feel at home..lol

Happy camping

Phil

Plenty of sites in the campsite search on here.  Enjoy the trip and people will help.  If it is hired I personally would avoid wildcamping.

I can second about checking doors and drawers.  OH used to forget to lock his drawer first corner it opened didnt cause any damage just pain finding place to pull up.

West Coast is lovely and Invererary is very MH friendly last year loads in car park. Bought nice bottle of whisky there too.

Hi Dave,

Just remember we were all novices once and the camping/caravan/motorhome fraternity are always more than willing to help and offer good suggestions if asked.

Be fully equipped with gas, especially if you are travelling outside Scotland or the UK in general.  Europe's electricity amperage is still medieval with about 3 amps of power as standard. Everyone overpacks clothes so pack what you think, halve it and halve it again. Open slather on everything else though. We travel with things like nail clippers, arthritis cream, tinned food, pasta, etc. for emergencies, books, emroidery, cards and things to do if holed up in bad weather if you can't get TV reception. Camping sites are fairly few and far between so wild camping is the go but one exception is a magical place called North Ledaig just north of Oban. It is huge but busy so it may be worthwhile to book ahead.  Kinlochbervie was our favourite alltime spot in the world 40 years ago but even though it's still lovely and I would think great for walking, the cold storage facilities now in the harbour have ruined our memories of the place a bit. But Scotland is still the best country (outside Australia that is!) Have fun and expect a few hiccups without losing your sense of humour. Fran & Martin
