Hi, we will be travelling back from Orkney/ scrabster.

can anyone advise which is the best/most scenic route from Scrabster to Inverewe.

I have actually plotted: Scrabster/Syre/Rhian Ledmore/Ullapool and onto Inverewe,

But! after reading a couple of your travels it seems the route from Scrabster to Durness and down the west coast to Ullapool sound equally as nice.

any advice would be appreciated.

If you haven't been before then I'd definitely recommend the north & west coastal route. The scenery along the north coast is pretty good, but down the west coast from Durness it's fantastic and there are some wonderful beaches. The coast road from Ullapool to Inverewe is particularily fine - we drove that in our motorhome last year.

When are you going? We're doing the reverse of your route the last week in July, heading from Ullapool to Durness then onto Orkney.

Hi den

Thanks for your advice re Orkney.  We have travelled your route in reverse, Bettyhill, Tongue, Durness (Sango Sands Campsite) Loch Eriboll and down the west to Scourie etc is a good run.  We stayed at Scourie, the owner is rather unique - you would love him or hate him!! he does not take bookings but manages to get everyone on.  The site is  right on the shore and the sunsets are to die for, its quite adequate with a small cafe etc however beware of the  village pub - we called for a barsnack one Sunday evening and the whole population of the County of Sutherland arrived after a footy match!! so look at the village notice boards b4 you venture within.  The site at Inverewe is not very big - book if u can. Happy travels

Pat

We're staying at Scourie and Sango Sands on our trip (plus Ardmair Point and Dunnet Bay) and I've really looking forward to it.

My experience of Inverewe last year was also that it was quite a busy sight as ee had to alter our schedule around availability there.

Hi everyone, whats the wild-camping situation like on the west coast?

We are heading up that way in August and have a night booked at Morvich Caravan Club Site. From there we were planning two nights wild-camping before reaching Dunnet Bay Caravan Club Site (also booked) and had intended heading across to the east coast for the journey north between the two club sites, but having read your posts I'm now seriously considering changing the plotted AutoRoute course to take in the west instead.

Hi Phil

Have you been up north of Scotland b4.  We have just had 3 nights at Morvich on our travels en route to the Islands.  Make sure you have plenty of cash cos the nearest cash machine & shops are at Kyle of Lochalsh which is 16 miles away.  Fill up with fuel at Morrisons at Fort William (as it gets quite dear the further up u go) and do a good shop there as it is the northernmost civilised shop.  Re the west coast route - in our opinion it is much nicer than the east, far more dramatic, scenery second to none.  You can stop at Scourie or Sango Sands and I think there is a campsite at Bettyhill.  From there the landscape changes and becomes very flat, uninteresting and scruffy.  Hope this of some help.

Pat

I agree totally. the west side has the most wonderful scenery and fantastic people. and there are many places to wild it [ www.wildcamping.co.uk ]
Blod will be mobile up there [July 23rd to Aug 31st] again this year in the west highlands and will finish off in Dunoon for the Highland games and Pipe band championships as usual. the council throw open a car park for visitors and there are vans and caravans there and hundreds of tents all camped up on the outskirts of the town. The camping is FREE and toilets are left open for the campers. It is party time from the thursday to the Sunday and the kids love the parades and the games.
this year it is on the 27th August. Anybody who is round there at this time is advised not to miss it.
So look out for Blod, the big green beastie and call in for a cuppa if you see us.

There is a terrific place on the Moray, east of Inverness called Findhorn. It has a hippy commune and i was amazed by the welcome we got. it was so good we stayed on the beach for 5 days. toilets and water available. chippy just at the entrance to the beach and local shops with friendly people saying hello to you as you walk round.
And No Midges!!!! Someone had even left a caravan parked there with awning out and gone home for a few days.
loved it

Hi again,

West coast it is then. I've plotted the course on AutoRoute and can't wait to go (stupid saying that is - I have no choice but to wait) just under five weeks to wait anyway. Hopefully find a couple of good wild-camp spots without too much trouble, then return down the east coast (shorter route).

If only we had more time available, then we could explore further and not have to plot a course so rigidly, but work commitments and all that .

Well this is the agenda:- two wild-camps on the way to Morvich CC site, two wild-camps on the way to Dunnet Bay CC, two wild-camps heading back south again before spending the last night at Park Coppice CC at Coniston. If there was an easy way to get fresh water and empty the chemi-loo then we'd happily skip the sites and just wild it all the way . Can't beat that sense of freedom.

I'd better stop typing now before we get onto chapter 7...lol

Bye for now

Phil

I was going to suggest heading for Arisaig on the west coast but I think you might have already been there
