Sorry for a bombardment of questions....

We stayed at a campsite for the first time in our new motorhome last weekend, and felt fairly novice as we literally had our van, the wind out awning and a table & a couple of chairs outside.  Everyone else, in either motorhomes, caravans or tents, seemed to have loads of extras like awnings, windbreaks, extra tents etc etc.

Are there any specific rules to what you can put on your pitch?  Do you get charged extra?  As we are taking our dog this coming weekend, we want to keep her confined, so putting a wind break just beyond the awning would be ideal.  However, I don't want to encroach on someone else's pitch or get moaned at.

Also, my son will be sleeping in the awning inside a pup tent.  We've declared him on the booking, so can anyone tell me if there are any set rules that say you can't have a pup tent inside an awning?

Many thanks

Sara (feeling rather the novice at the moment)

C &CC seem to leave to the site managers discretion, and your common sense. We go as a big family with pup tents and windbreaks. Seems as long as you respect the distance to next unit, especially with flammable things (awnings, tents etc). I have never come across a list of what you can put on your site. I suppose as long as you have neihbourly respect, most would leave you to enjoy. Just relax and treat others----- and all that. Enjoy your camping.

Are we unusual in that the only thing we'll usually have on our pitch is the motorhome itself? We don't even use an awning.

All rules are specified in the camp's rule sheet, which is usually on display somewhere at the camp's entrance and you can the reception for a copy of it. If something is not mentioned in such list, then it's allowed.
Usually, you get charged for extra tents, dogs, extra car and such. Of the things you cannot have, well, usually you can't have open fires but some sites do allow that. I am not really aware of things that you can't have on your pitch. As usual, a pinch of common sense should be exercised in conjunction with the camp's regulamentation.

I find it unusual when I see little pine trees standing by a tent's entrance, or people carrying small fences and flowers from home to simulate a small garden in front of their caravan (seen all of this in Uppsala, Sweden)

Quickly hides her potted plants and fencing behind the nearest windbreak   (just kidding)

It really does vary from site to site.

I would be very much surprised if you were charged for the pup-tent inside the awning though, as that is just acting as a tent 'inner'.

We are the same as Steve above. Not even got a pull out awning, chairs or anything. But that's me lol. I think within reason Sara you can have what you please, after all you have paid for all of the pitch, not just some of it.

All I have is a small utility tent, 6ft x 6ft, used as a toilet tent becuase there just isn't the room or "convenience" in my camper, lol!

The Camping & Caravanning Club sites let you put up anything at no extra charge, as long as they are located next to the main unit, within your pitch area, not used for cooking, and maintain a distance of a minumum of 20 feet (6m) from adjacent units on neighbouring pitches.

Another here with nothing but the motorhome. We have a couple of folding chairs under the bench seat but haven't used them since we gave up tent-camping. I really don't know why we take them at all!

Another one who carries very little.  No awning, pup tent, dogs or windbreaks.  We do have two folding chairs but they only come when the weather is forecast to be good which is usually wrong and they never get to see the light of day.

I do love to see which caravan can have the most stuff outside.  Great fun to wander round looking at all the stuff then watching them pack it all away.  Have seen caravans with that orange tape style fencing that gas board people use to totally surround their pitch one even had a little gate.  Honest and on a site in NI a caravan with a dog kennel on a pallet.

Welcome to motorhoming!  Great isn't it?  Free as a bird.

We've camped on lots of sites in the UK and are just back from a fortnight touring in France.  I would say it's more unusual to see motorhomes with anything other than a pull out awning and a chair or two outside.  It's tuggers who seem to take everything including the kitchen sink.  (See my posting a few weeks ago, re the unfairness of us paying the same as them for a pitch!!)

We motorhomers like the freedom of being unencumbered by a load of stuff.  The most you'll ever see outside ours is a couple of fold up chairs and a little table - no trouble to move on when we want to - great!

We just have the van, previously had an awning on the rascal to accomodate the loo.

Some sites don't allow gazebo's, others charge for every additional item, e.g 50p per night for awnings, extra per dog.

It can add up, especially if you don't really need the extras

We've only stayed at a couple of sites but we were charged just for the pitch, even though we did have a pup tent.

Just bought an awning for the Romahome, but don't think it'll be any extra.

As long as you stay within the confines of your pitch you should be ok (which is fairly simple when you've only got a little one)37 (motorhome that is)
