This is showing our age now (only just I might add!!) but for over 50's try Saga - Freephone 0800 015 4752.  We needed breakdown for Europe as well as the UK for our Motorhome, and got it through Saga for £80, which I think is a good deal.

Ina.

We recently broke down in Devon on our way to Cornwall and had to come back home to Kent.

The Green Flag mechanic was with us within half an hour and, when he said that our motorhome was beyond repair, the tow truck was there with another half an hour.

Both the mechanic and driver were brilliant. Our towtruck driver (from and independent garage) said Green Flag were the best and that was who he uses/

Word of Warning... Don't use the RAC..

They took over 4 hours on friday night to just decide if my Motorhome was covered (based on length) .. A patrol man even assesed that it was too big over the phone!! I said its quite big, could be 18 ft could be bigger, I don't have a tape measure, obviously he didn't want to get out of bed! No one even came out to try and repair it. First call was logged at 19:30 got home at 2:30, only broke down 40 miles from home!!!

Plus they don't call you back when they promise to!

Grrrr...

Hi,

I have RAC for my car (through warranty) a Volvo S40. It wouldnt start, nothing at all only the courtesy light. A neighbour tried his jump leads nothing. The RAC man came. Said the battery was dead flat in his opinion (without testing) and said the jump starting had caused massive damage because 'you shouldnt jump start modern cars from other cars'.

Tested the battery ok. Still maintained the jump starting had damaged electrics. Couldnt expalin why it would not start in the first place. Flummoxed he got on the mobile to 'our technical service' (obviously the trained mechanic). Gave up and arranged transport to a Volvo dealer.

I looked in the handbook and there was a section on how to jump start a Volvo from another car. Dealer said the fault was an ignition wire which came loose. Car had no damage to the electrics. Mechanic (trained) said the RAC  man was a 'wally'.

What is the point of paying a yearly sum when they send someone like that?

Bill

Hello everybody just a little story, we are new to motorhoming and on our very first outing, following a major service, in our American winnebago broke down ont he M62, it was only 30 miles from home, bank holiday monday and our own silly fault was not insured. I spent hours on the mobile ringing round and eventually a private breakdown truck called S & H Recovery arrived to tow us home. Except we were automatic so had to take the drive shaft out, considering it was a bank holiday the price to tow us home was £220.00 including the call out charge which was £88 plus VAT. arrived home very embarrased, unloading our pride and joy infront of all the neighbours,,,,a harsh lesson for us P.s the problem was the timing belt had wrapped around the alternator and the spare in the van did not fit aaahh!!!!! take care out there Lorraine

I got a good deal through Norwich Union Direct.
The insurance for the campervan was a good price and the breakdown cover was excellent. I got the European breakdown cover for both my campervan and car so that I am covered in the U.K. and in Europe with the two vehicles for around £134 a year

I just managed to get my full years premium back from the RAC .. (with only 2 weeks left!!)  as they messed me about so much.. Last year I paid £200+ for full european cover for 2 cars and 3 motorbikes..

I have now gone with Green Flag, full european cover for 2 cars 2 motorbikes and 1 20ft motorhome (they cover up to 7m and the rac are only 18ft (5.4m)) for £139!!

Result!
