You should get something reasonable, if a bit elderly. Do have a good look round, though - don't buy the first one you see, you'll always see something better afterwards anyway! Your best bet is going to be private, though. Go for a larger engine, even in a small van, and get diesel if you can for economy. We only get about 15 mpg around town and 22 mpg on a run. Ours was £3,000 and it has a small toilet "cupboard", sink, hob, oven, fridge and came complete with storage tent, two brand new camp beds, crockery, cutlery, etc. because the people selling were going back to Ireland and didn't want to take it with them. This may not be the best time of year to buy, though, another couple of months when the main season is over might be a better buyer's market - if you can wait that long!
Good luck - you'll love it! So convenient - 20 mins and you're all hooked up, water on board, awning or whatever erected and you're having a cup of tea and watching the rest of the world putting up their tents!!
