has anyone made their own conversion on this little van?  I know there is one professional converter, but I wondered how well I could equip a basic van.  I'm thinking basic, as I've already got all the camping gear for cooking etc.  probably just a blow up mattress inside and insulate the walls and ceiling too.  I'm a fan of petrol due to diesel fumes making me travel sick.

any ideas gratefully considered..

We had a bedford rascal that was converted to a camper. It had however been done professionally, by drivelodge i think, It was  a great little vehicle and we were sorry to part with it.

Problems I forsee with your suggestion are:-

will there be enough space for a blowup matress as our van utilised the front seats for sleeping?

Possible insurance/dvla problems as to reregister it as a camper I think there are minimum requirements such as a fixed(pullout) bed mechanism, otherwise you are effectively sleeping in a van and you might find certain sites/organisations won't allow this. I could be being overly pessimistic here, it might be worth a look on the selfbuild campervan sites.

There are a couple of places that convert small vehicles, have a look at drivelodge, wheelhome, reimo also convert to your requirements.

thankyou to all who made suggestions.  I looked at one of these Suzuki vans today and although its sweet and would probably be ok to kip in, (I embarassed my son by laying down in it), the engine is under the front seat and an engineer friend has just repaired one that badly overheated, ok so all cars have faults, but I might just start looking for an estate car instead!

cheers Riannon

anyone camping this bank holiday, hope the weather is good.

I've got the Hyundai microbus version (bet I spelt that wrong).  I must confess it does suffer with overheating but its such a versatile little van and I was amazed to see a converstion at the Dettling Motorhome Show so I took a picture of it but I dont know how to upload it.

Hi

thanks for all your comments.  your point (bigmoney2) about not being allowed on sites struck true, I rang around a couple of the independent campsites and they said no, they wouldn't allow any vans on site, unless a proper camervan.

have now settled for buying a car and a new tent, not the luxury, but there you go, we're campers we can rough it now and again!
