Hello everyone

My family want to but a motorhome - but feeling a bit daunted - where do we start? Dealer or private? We are a family of four with about £20K budget - is it best to try to buy new?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Chris

I would advise looking at one of the bigger deallers in order to get an idea of the type of vehicle you want, coachbuilt/van conversion etc. Also facilities needed such as seperate washroom, and different layout types.

Or you could go to one of the big motorhome shows, a great day out and plenty to see. Once you've narrowed it down a bit you can compare prices.

Our first van was a private sale, a bedford rascal for £3k so not much to loose. the next one was a autosleeper harmony from a dealler for £17k with 12months warranty

hi wolsrup,
well first of all use this thing, the computer. look at different sites and pictures online just to see what layouts you like. not suggesting you buy online but you are able to get an idea of prices etc. Ebay is a good source for pictures but be very wary. i have been looking on there every day. you can order brochures online from dealers, saving you having to go traipsing round asking everyone but gosh isn't it fun going in all the vans - each one seems nicer than the one before.
i'm still looking myself

Hi i have a kontiki swift, which sleeps 6 ( 2 over the cab, 2 on the dinette, 2 at the rear)

we are a family of five, but most of the time i am takings friends away, which brings us to 4 kids, we have the rear ending livingroom which i find is fab asthe children can play/ watch telly and hubby and i can sit either in the front seats(which are swival and turn around) or seat in the dinette which means we are not on top of each other all the time,

good luck, you can pick a good one for 12k slightly over and under, but if you know the design you want that really narrowsd it down, i advised you never to buy new, as a second hand one has all the 'added extra's on it

Thanks Rebecca

Funnily enough we went looking to day and came to the conclusion that a 6 berth was the best option but we are worried that the length will prohibit visiting some places? Can you comment?

Would you say a five berth will feel cramped for four, during the day, I mean?

Thanks

Ever thought of a fifth wheel outfit?  We saw them at the Shepton show today and thought what a great alternative they are.  Bucket loads of space but once on site you just unhitch (or demount!) and then you have a normal pick up with a crew cab that can be driven around like a normal vehicle.  Fantastic!!  We won't be going the motorhome route now that's for sure.
