Hi

I'm new and hoping for advice.  I want a navigation system which I can use in MH, easily transfer to partners car and also take with me walking the hills as a gps device using Memory-Map.

I hear that the Mio 168 is good with its own GPS receiver.

Anyone any experience of this or others, when used as I envisage?

Is there one called Tom Tom?

I believe this unit can be swopped from vehicle to vehicle and used whilst walking.

I have no experience of this item just something I read in a magazine whilst waiting to have my head filled with dentists gloves etc.

I have not used one for hillwalking, I dont see the point myself since you should be going out carrying and being able to use a printed map and compass, so why not use them ? 

Can you store digital maps of high enough resolution (1:25000) on one (just curious about that one - dont know the answer) ?

Are they waterproof and drop proof  ?

I also find memory map at the walking scale of 1:25000 fairly pricey.

Hi Alanmo, we have the mio 168 and are finding it great.  We also bought the europe maps with it and all in it cost £299.  It can be swapped easily from car to car and also taken walking and can be used in conjunction with memory maps software for walkers as my partner's dad has this software (ordnance survery map software).

Memory  map was about £170 for the whole of england although you can buy them by area rather than as a whole.  My partner is a software developer and researched long and hard before buying so I am confident he has bought a decent bit of kit.

I have seen OS maps on GPS kit at the res of 1:25000 and they were pricey. I don't see the point either it is much easier to survey the surroundings and a paper based map.

The only use I can see for GPS in these circumstances is to get a "Where am I?" fix in very poor visibility or any other situation where you have become disorientated and cannot locate your position by other means. However, these are very rare (and with proprer precautions should not arise), not many of us travel in pitch black conditions! LOL!

Ogwen Mountain Rescue Team have an interesting story about some people who were trapped in heavy mist and did not want to proceed. They phone the Mountain Rescue Team and gave their GPS reading which placed them in Wrexham town centre!

Hi can't say I've been able to catch out the GPS on Navman, I won't give a reading until it locks on to 3 or more I think. But agree with the above, it can and does happen.

Many thanks for very usefull advice.  Despite comments about conventional navigation on walks I going to get one.
