Hi Sonesta,

Read on another topic about you towing a smart car occasionally and wondered if you could give us the pros and cons.

Did you get the car locally as we live in North Lincolnshire and are thinking about getting a smart car to tow?

Thanks for any info

SL

Hi Scarlet,

Firstly we only bought our Smart car recently and have towed it only the once but it was absolutely fine? My husband does the driving and he said he did not really notice too much difference except when climbing up a hill and then he could a little.  It towed really easily and we were quite impressed. We tow it on a trailer and this way your car is not clocking up mileage either and the trailer we have is purposely built for the Smart car, here is a link to the website http://www.bantamtrailers.co.uk/ I think there are other ways to tow a Smart or any other small car for that matter - but am not quite sure what they are but hopefully someone else may be able to advise you on what those are. I have heard of cars being towed on an A frame or using a Brake Buddy but like I say my knowledge of those is non existant.

We bought our Smart from a place not far from Newark called Smarts 4U - they are very good and sell used Smarts, a lot of which have only been used by Smart employees and so are well looked after and quite new.  It is a family business run by 2 brothers and we were well pleased with both the price, the service and most importantly the car. Here is a link to their website http://www.smarts4u.co.uk/en/welcome.asp They also gave us a good deal on the car we traded in and so all in all we were very satisfied. There is a Smart dealership in Lincoln too called Smart of Lincoln and they have a good choice too but they did not offer us such a good part exchange deal on the car we were trading in. So we opted for one from Smarts 4U.

Smart of Lincoln sell both New and Used Smarts and the young salesman there is very helpful. Here is a link to their website too http://www.smartoflincoln.co.uk/ With both dealerships not being too far away from one another it might be a good idea to visit both and see if there is anything in that takes your fancy. We went for the Passion Coupe and it is a lovely little car and is really nippy. Cheap to tax, to insure and to run does 55 to 60 mpg!!!

It is really great towing the Smart car because that means we can have the best of both worlds now. We dont intend taking it on every single trip but it will be great for those times when we do and when getting into certain towns or villages might prove to be a problem with a motorhome or we will tow it for those times when we plan to stay in one spot for a few days.

You would not believe just how much leg room is in them either Scarlet and I am a large lady and even I fit in it ok lol The Passion is both fully and semi automatic but other models like the Pulse for instance are only semi automatic.  All in all they are a great little car to tow behind a motorhome. Obviously they only seat 2 people so not much use for a family but for couples they are great.  Can't fault them really and if you are tempted I would say go for it and I am sure you wont regret it. We are taking ours to Morocco in just under 2 weeks for 6 weeks and I am sure we will find it really useful when wanting to getting around some of the small towns and villages where most likely we wouldnt be able to get to so easily with our 24 foot motorhome.

You will need to have a special tow bar fitted and we had ours done at Towtal - they did an excellent job and were very reasonable (half the price of some places) and they made it to measure and it was all done and fitted in a day! Their website is http://www.towtal.co.uk/ they also make A frames, Trailers and Brake Buddys too.

Hope this helps and if you need any more info then I am only too happy to help.

Sonesta

Sonesta,

Thanks for all the information, I don't think you left anything out lol.

The links will come in very handy, it may well be in the new year that we will be seriously looking.

Thanks again
