It takes about six years for a hospital anesthetist to be trained to knock you out with gas, without killing you!

These gas attack artists must be very clever!

As mentioned previously, about 90% of motor homes have a naked flame at the base of the fridge.  It never ignites the attackers incoming gas - amazing!

No, it's all a myth, perpetuated I believe by alarm manufacturers.

It gets better!

If you are attacked by gas what do you do? Get out and fight with the desperate rogue anaethetist from hell?

No buy one of these gas masks and drive away to freedom and safety! No piccy unfortunately and doesn't say if you are OK to sleep all night in one.

BTW aren't these alarms the same as propane alarms?

I am of the urban myth brigade and feel safe enough in my little van. I have no intention of fitting gas alarrms or rigging up deadlocks and habitation door security, especially when THE WINDOWS ARE ALL FASTENED WITH A SMALL PLASTIC CATCH.

I know that the common theif is not super intelligent, but to go to the trouble of gassing etc when two fingers under the lip of the window will almost silently afford access to your 55K worth of pride & joy.

95% of us will never have any problems, although the 5% of the ones affected will have their plight relayed by 90% of the rest of the fraternity at every opportunity, this will result in each story being retold 100 fold gathering more momentum each time.

Whilst I am of the 95% I shall continue to feel secure, when I don't feel secure, I shall just cease to continue the hobby & not attempt to ruin the enjoyment of others by frightening them to death.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the subject, that's mine & I'm buggered if anyone will change it.

Live it, love it & don't let them grindyou down.

We have been carvanning for the last few years abroad and so far have had no issues.  Whilst on a touring holiday in July 2005 we stayed in an Austrian service station overnight enroute to Hungary.  On our return we stayed in a France and Belgium Service station overnight again with no issues.  I hadn't heard of any dangers until reading this.

Have any of the thousands of truck drivers sleeping overnight in service stations experieced any of these gassing incidents?

Debbie.  Go to the Road Haulage / Truckers websites and youll read plenty of reports. I cant believe some of the stupid responses this thread has thrown up. All the thread was started for was to warn people to be careful where they stopped. It has happened and it will happen again in the future, just take care is the message so that you dont become one of the statistics.

I am always surprised at the amount of passion that this subject arouses.  There is obviously a clear division between those that will believe what they are told without any evidence and those that require evidence.  Why people get angry about it is a mystery to me.  I take the warnings of potential gas attacks as given in good faith, but will not personally believe such an unlikely story without some evidence.  I don't see why that should upset anyone.  So far in the three years or more that I have been hearing these reports, no one has offered any reference to any evidence of a specific case.

The reason it upsets people Steven is purely the fact this subject comes up year in and year out and as has been sugested before usually comes out at the beginning of each camping season (alarm sales) It was even reported on watchdog a few years ago when they to found the reports did not stand up to scrutiny. The problem is one day some unscrupulous person will try this form of attack because of these so called reports and on that day someone WILL DIE most gasses that could knock anyone out are very highly flamable when mixed with oxygen and toxic the other few that aren't are so much heavier than air you'd need a tanker sat by a van pumping it in. you'll notice the only person who has got sarcastic and angry on this forum is Tony who is so convinced its happening I also notice he only has six posts. unlike others i don't believe it to be gass attacks, still firmly believe any kind of drink related spiking is much more likely and gives the same bad head and disorientation when recovering

I agree romany.

I was realy wondering why anyone would get angry with those who simply and politely ask for at least one convincing reference to a confirmed incident.  I think the doubters have shown a lot of patience considering the potential dangers and uneccisary fears that arrise from these sort of rumours.

After all, no one is stopping those who are concerned from taking any precautions that they want to.

I note that the original poster (hello Dave) was making a request for advice on what he had heard and was not himself scaremongering at all.  Hope you are not put off posting Dave,

As this was a new thing to me I posted a warning thread yesterday (not as a scaremonger story...shame on you few ) but it got moved??  After reading the above threads I must say...my friends had parked at a reputable campsite in France and not at a motostop.

I wondered how the parrots they were carrying had not died as surely birds are more suceptable (sp?) to gas than humans but their dogs had not woken them with barking as would be usual???  And the wife found it really difficult to rouse the husband in the morning (MUCH more than usual)

The reply bringing in the question of the naked flame made me question why the gas had not ignited..

Is there a detective in the house???

Maybe the dogs had been doped as well - something in the drinking water perhaps?
