Hi there, what would you buy if you had a budget of £12000, campervan, motorhome? It would be for my inlaws to get away at weekends.

I am in transit from a caravan to a motor home. You can get a lovely caravan for the money. Seems you have to go a little more for a nice motor home. I am just a bit fed up with lugging the 'van and would like to experience (what I imagine is)the freedom of up sticks and go! Though to get the same facilities as in my 'van, seems like I have got to go £20000 ish. The thought of seeing that sort of money sitting on my drive 35 weeks makes me gasp though.

Thankyou all for your comments. That link you gave me Cas was helpful, and like you say Royell it looks like they should be able to find something around 1994. My inlaws live in West Wales, does anyone know of any desent sellers that way?

Good question, we got a caravan brand new for a bit less than that, Nice van but go fed up with going back and two to the storage. So then we went for a Campervan / Motorhome same again just a bit less than your £12,000. We wanted somthing that we could park on the drive and park in a standard parking place at Asda. So forget the Motor Home had to be a Campervan. Got one of them.

So in a good position to look at your question.

My view:-

It depends on how you want to use it and what you require from the unit.

So for the Caravan

Lots more for your money £12k would get you a brand new van or a good secondhand higher spec van.

Generally get more room, equipement for you money as your not buying a motor to drive it.

Comfortable for short or long stays

For the Campervan / Motorhome

Easy set up, Easy pack up

Only one insurance if you don't have a car

Very good for short breaks weekends away. Bigger modles can be as good even better than caravans for long stays

Can be used as main vehicle when not camping.

Can be used for days out

So what would I do? Don't ask me we are about to sell the Campervan and the Caravan. Thinking of getting a caravan with a fixed bed but only because we can't fit a Motorhome of the size we need up the drive.

We got our Hymer 564 for £9,000 and it's got everything we need! It's only our first motorhome and we may upgrade in a couple of years time, but for now we're well pleased with our purchase!

You could buy me a new engne for mine  lol Have seen some gorgeous motorhomes at Brownhills in Newark but they were a bit more than £12000!!!!!!!!! Have seen quite a few autosleepers for around that price and have plenty of room but look around first because the difference in the space trhat is available is vast. We were surprised that a 'L' reg VW autosleeper was £12,995 and there wasnt as much room in this than what is in our campervan which is a VW but made in 1980 and only cost 1200!!!!! So a big difference in price shop around and keep an eye out for those bargains (they are out there honest)!!!!!!! Found that Hymers have more space than most models

Good luck and happy shopping - i know id love £12000 to spend on a MH!!!!!! lol

It's so easy to be biased towards what one has oneself... good grief, I turned all posh for a moment then.

What I mean is... if you've got a (insert what you've got here) then that's what you'll generally recommend.

Based on that, get a nice tidy low mileage German import... and make sure its a Hymer!   lol

When we wanted to return to camping, 2 years ago we got really keen on a van conversion until we saw them in reality and realised how small inside they are.

Previously we had owned 3 coachbuilt Autotrail motorcaravans but did'nt like the HGV size when driving and being stuck for transport once they were on site, ie having to walk and use buses and so on.

We tried caravans but were unfortunate re stability.

As we walked back to the car we saw several folding campers and we are on our second a Pennine Pullman which we tow with a VW Gof diesel auto.
