As you are new to MH it is wise to look before you leap. There are so many different types and sizes of motorhomes (Hymer, Fiat, Mercedes, and so on) and equal as much prizes. Best is to talk to motorhomeowners and ask them why they bought the home they have.
I bet you they will show you around and you can get a clearer picture of what you are looking for. Go to the shows in your neighbourhood; there must be some around Dundee or Inverness or up north a bit. I know from my latest trip in Scotland there are many campsites in your region. Why not take a look on such a site and have a look around.
Be carefull if you buy a van just for you. Life is funny and you never know who might turn up and then suddenly, the van could be to small. On the other hand, don't buy a six berth just for the same reason.

Hi Donald, Maybe a Romahome would be worth consideration as it is ideal for one or two people. You can get 40 - 50 mpg and I think the road tax is £165 or £170. It only cost us £157 per year for insurance.

Besides the fact that it is very economical you can use it as an everyday vehicle as well if you want to, and we find it has everything we need. We bought ours in September last year and have already had seven weekends away in it. We have now bought the driveaway awning which gives us a bit more room especially when we have our two week hols this year.

There are other camper vans simlar in size to ours I am sure but don't know much about them. We are obviously biased anyway as we love the one we have got. Photos of ours are in our gallery.                                         

we have a vw campervan and pay £268 for the yr. Tax is £93.50 for 6 months and they are very economical to run. We have a turbo diesel on a H reg cost us £800 from a man who knows his stuff it had no interior but now the OH is fixing that. Getting to the point where we need electrics now and the guy that got us the VW is going to fit them for us (well the outside socket and earth it for us). Have looked at MH's and yeah there are some we love but for the money u pay and the space that u do and dont get we love our T25. Glad we had one and wouldnt have anything else for the time being. We use Adrian Flux for our insurance (thats fully comp with unlimited mileage)

A warm welcome to UKCS. I hope you manage to find a wee 'van' suitable to your needs. You've had some good info from other members recommending the Romahome and V-dubs which should be economical to run, insure and maintain.

I have had a skeg at your homepage and viewed some of your excellent pics. Very interested in a trip to Dundee which is a city we have not visited in our many trips to Scotland. We did stay at Balbirnie Park, Markinch last year and could have done a day trip on the train but chose Auld Reekie instead.

Nice to see you in the tartan which reminds me of my father. Benbecula born Gaelic man who was a piper for 66 years and QOCH after the Lovat Scouts.

Hope your not offended when I say your username of "skypilot" reminds me that is the nickname we gave the padre in the RN.

My previous camper was a trafic t1000 petrol 1700cc,fuel consumption was in the low 20s per gallon, cant remember insurance cost. You mentioned Daihatsu, I have a Hijet 6 seater 993cc, great little runaround tax £60.50 for 6 mths and fuel £10 worth will do 100 miles locally probably more on a run. Insurance £140 comprehensive as a car.I have taken 3 seats out (more room for my dog) and am thinking about putting a basic removable bed and camping stove in for short summer trips. To put this into perspective my transit diesel coachbuilt 24mpg local 30mpg on run.Insurance £310 with 4 yrs no claim and £170 yr tax.

PS I really liked the Trafic but diesel would have been better.
