Hi there everyone....just had my 14yr old t25 around the Isle of Skye and elsewhere in Scotland over Easter. Im a newbie to all this....first thing I noticed was the high petrol consumption ( for 900 miles spent about £200.....cos im new I think I brought far too much stuff.....was pretty heavy.....so this would have contributed....anyway....Im goin round Europe for two months AND I NEED YOUR HELP. I just used two duvets from home for sleeping for the scottish trip....one to lie on cos the bed feels a bit hard. BUT....to help me cut down on weight....here is my question:

what is the single most important item/gadget....useful thing that you would take with you in a small camper pop top on a two month trip round Europe in the summer?

Any other tips would be very welcome...particularly on bedding??

Cheers if you have any time to help.

duvets don't weigh much. Got to make sure you are comfortable if you are going for a long time.

Karlie my partner and I have made two tours of Europe in a T25, both pop top and high top. We used quilts but I'm getting a good quality double sleeping bag for the next trip. Some double sleepers have enough material to cover two boddies (wrapped!) and still have ample spare. Thing is, these are far easier to roll and pack down.

Have you a rear parcel shelf? We roll our bedding up in there so when the bed becomes a rear seat again you can't see the bedding.

My experience of T25 pop tops abroad are, you can get through most toll roads as a vehicle, but because you lack high top permanent storage the lower rear seating and floor gets used as storage space, making stopping for a quick cuppa or something to eat a logistical nightmare!

Take a spare water pump at £28 in the UK. We were charged 140 euros/ £90 for a water pump on the continent!

I'll try and think of some things for you but I'm busy trying to sort out my jaunt to the Czec Republic (16th May).

Good luck.

Look on Ebay currently I have an eggshell foam mattress topper for T25 model, makes bedtime much more cosy and it is lightweight.  Take a look all you campers who suffer with their backs from upholstery ridges in the bed.  A genuine ad.

Tongue in cheek suggestion ,so apologies...

But how about a diesel engine?  My 22yr old hi-top (extra wind resistance) T25 does just over 400 miles on a full tank.  A full tank is costing me approx €50 (approx £35).  900 miles would be 2 tanks and a bit, so lets say €110, which is about £75 sterling in total.  Which, even if my currency conversion is a little out, and Irish diesel prices a little cheaper, is nowhere near £200 (€286).  I'm running a 1.6D engine.  According to calculations I do everytime I fill up I'm getting approx 37 mpg.  As I said its a tongue in cheek suggestion, but something worth considering in the future maybe?

Bedding wise, we take 2 summer weight duvets.  With very little persuasion they will wrap up into small packages, and each one with fit into an everyday carrier bag.  We find 2 summer weight duvets takes up less room than a deep filled winter duvet, and provides the same warmth.

Good luck with your trip! Will you blog it?

Hi Karlie

Me again

I was searching for this webpage belonging to some friends of ours.  This couple spent SIX months in Europe, travelling in their bay window VW camper van, with FOUR kids and a dog.  I seem to recall their stay included the winter of '04/'05, so I'm sure they had lots of warm bedding with them.  Their bay is a pop top too...and slightly smaller than a t25.  I haven't read through for a while but I'm sure Suzie blogs about allocation of storage space etc.  Maybe you can get some inspiration?
