We own a VW transporter converted to a Kamper by Autohomes (no longer in existence we believe). The Kamper has a pop top of the type that has fold up and down sides (some kind of plastic with windows) and gas struts to elevate the roof. This is great having the extra headroom but difficult to raise and a very ugly. We love the van and it is generally in excellent condition, we are wondering if there would be any chance of fitting a new type of pop top to it that was a little less gross and a little more aerodynamic. We would like an elevating type with hinges at the back or side. The van is 1991 Type 25 if this helps.
If this is not the job for you, then perhaps you could point us in the right direction,
If you get a motorhome magazine you will see ads for campervan convertors that will fit a new a new roof--there will be one nr you--for the whole job on a drive in drive out basis expect to pay Ģ2k but reduce cost by removing old roof yerself & fitting out interior of new one-for complete diy you can pay Ģ400 for glass fibre hitop shell-this is stuck on with polyurethane adhesive/sealant such as Sikaflex--
I should add-if you want a 'Westfalia' style pop top-that hinges from the back-& has a roof rack fairing over the cab-imho the best looking-these are still avalable-do a google search--
I just happened to see your post about your pop top. We have the same autohomes poptop which was damaged on a ferry, they offered to pay for a replacement. I have been trying to desperately find someone to replace it but to no avail.
You will find all the info you need on the forum site and the tech section, including the possibility of a replacement pop-top for sale. Not an easy job, by the way, to fit a Westy pop-top to a non-factory `van, the roof aperture is, aparantley, unique to genuine Westfalia factory fitted roofs. Anything is possible yhough, with correct know-how
------------- Life is one big holiday, only broken up by as little work as possible
After searching around www.oconnorscampers.co.uk/roofs.htm
seem to be the only company to fit new westfalia style roofs to all vw vans including the t25. He knew all about my autohomes solid pop top and chatted about all the options.
