this is a copy of a post i placed on a vw camper forum ive had no help as yet so wondered if any body on here could help

many thanks mike

hi sorry to revisit with a question but i need help with 87 type 25 petrol
on the way home from our holls the water temp gauge failed ie first read to cold then nothing i had a new sender fitted and got the van back with an air lock in the cooling system and the gauge reading 3/4 across.
got the air lock sorted at the garage but was told the gauge was probaly reading high because it was new (funny i thought you bought new things so they worked properly.
any way to cut a long story short after new thermostat and temp sender for the electric fan, the needle still goes nearly 3/4 across then after 1.5miles seams to rest just of the right hand side of the red light, is this in you opinion ok, i have had a 2.1injection a 1.6 diesel and two of these 1915cc petrols and the needle has allways been on the red light (the red light is off)
hope somebody can advise me many thanks
mike

The needle normally runs just to the right of the red light--when climbing hills it will climb higher--dont labour the engine on hills-drop a gear & keep it revving--if the needle keeps going up when engine is working hard--put heater on full--& watch the needle plunge--you will notice there is no red section to the temp gauge--it it overheats the red flashing light will come on--if your standing in traffic-& the needle climbs the fan should come on--if your radiator is original its probably full of crap anyway which wont help--if when working hard the temp gauge goes well to the right its no prob--if the engine temp reads low the thermostat is u/s--& it will do yer engine no good at all--VW flat 4s run hot--
