I have a very large motorhome. Over the years I have toured on a motorbike with everything I need in a tank bag about a foot square, 4 up in a mini round France and Spain, several variations of caravan and small VW type camper van. A couple of year ago we decided that we wanted to try a big motorhome, so we bought the biggest one we could find (OK - Its a toy thing :D ) This was soon followed by 2 jetskis. Now there are not many weekends that we stay home.
I go 'wild' with a few of my mates in the Mournes - basically pull off the road, go and cut up some dead trees, get a fire started and sup on a continuous stream of cold beer from the fridge.
It is invaluable for jet skiiing - we used to go, hire a jet ski, take turns to get cold and wet - stay cold and wet until you get home, wonder why you do it. - Now we arrive, launch the skis - play about for a couple of hours, have a hot meal, play for another while, hot shower and get all the gear ready for the next morning. Sometimes you want all the comforts of home - I would love to go jet skiing from my front door.
We usually spend a month or 6 weeks in Europe in the summer. Given that we have a 10 hour drive just to get to Dover, it would take us 6 weeks to get to San Tropez in a car, as the kids wouldn't tolerate more than a couple of hours stuck in the back seat without food stops, toilet stops, cold drinks, boredom stops etc etc. Last year we made a 28 hour drive without stopping for longer than was necessary to fill a tank of diesel. We took turns driving, 3 hours on 3 hours rest, kids (aged 5 and 3) spent the time watching DVD's, playing games, drawing - endless supply of food drink and toilet access. Left home in Belfast at 2.00PM on Friday afternoon, arrived Vallon Pont D'Arc at 6.00PM Saturday. Set up for the night and in the bar by 6.15.
The only downside that I have found is parking in big cities. London is cr4p, Paris isn't too bad but for San Tropez, Cannes, Nice and Monaco we found it easier to park up and use the train. Spain and Italy seem a little friendlier and most of the bigger cities would have some facility signposted. That said, I have visited most of these cities by car, and parking is always an issue.
Most of the negatives that have been raised here can be planned for, and once you are used to it, you don't even realise you are planning. I like an early morning round of golf - my wife likes to stay in bed with the kids and watch TV/read to them. Doesn't take too much planning to make sure we occasionally pick a site near a course. Every time we pass a supermarket we stop and stock up (within reason) we can be totally self sufficient for 5-6 days, but would rarely stay in one place for so long, so getting the groceries in isn't an issue.
I've just reread this and jeez do I sound like an old codger - somebody pass me my pipe and slippers (I'm 33 btw - but I imagine I willl be a very old codger before I would be without a motorhome again)
