Defo go for the online application, saves all that writing out and queuing in the post office!
We had ours automatically sent to us but with our house being upside down with decorating and furniture changing we couldn't find the darned things. So, five days before we were off to Amsterdam, (in May), I was running around like a headless chicken unable to find these things, so went on that ehic website and thought 'I'll just apply for two on here'! WRONG!!! It showed, (after I'd filled in all the details!), that we already had valid cards and as they were not yet expired we would have to apply for duplicates. Well, I discovered all this over the weekend, so no possibility of contacting them on the phone number given and had to wait till the Monday. We were going away at the crack of dawn on the Thursday so time was tight!
Rang first thing on the Monday and the very helpful chap said that I wasn't to worry if our duplicates hadn't arrived before we left as all I needed was a phone number , (which he gave me), anyway coz as everything is automated, I would ring this number, (or the hospital/doctor would), and with either my NHS or National Insurance number, they would immediately be able to authorise the emergency treatment now that everything's on the computer!
As luck would have it, the cards did arrive on the Wednesday anyhoo, so no probs, but these cards are much simpler and less bulky than the old paper thingies.
You may even find when you apply online that you already have valid ones in your name, which would just mean that they'd been lost in the post. In which case, you'd just need to do what I did, no hassle.
