for anyone travelling about in scotland this is a great site....

http://www.midgeforecast.co.uk/home/forecast.asp

We are just finishing packing and are heading off north of the border... have got my catnip oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil, citronella, jungle formula, avon sss........ not that I am paranoid or anything!!!!!!....... last year only hubby got eaten alive, my brown bread eating and lavender oil kept me safe.... He would only go back this year if we found something that works to keep the little monsters off of him..... the perfect guinea pig.

Haven't told him that the West coast is Midge central... shhhhhhhhhhh

aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SCAU-TTISH MIDGES they take nooooooooo......... prisoners i can catagoricaly say the nothing works as you would hope..........Ive tried all of the above mentioned and i still come back like a big festering blister with boils................

although i do find that tee tree oil shampoo used as all over body wash seemed to work for about ..........................10 minuites

some people have said that they are attracted by sweaty feet so meens i'm totaly knackered..............

Bruce should have used these little buggers as his line of defence instead of the stones and boulders.......

Have you seen the size of there teeth there 3x the size of temselves

the thing that makes me laugh it the fact that where ever you go in the height of summer theres people covered up and wearing head gear that of a bee keeper

and all the shops are selling t shirts with the famous scottish midge on in fact we went into a small gift shop near the Forest Of Glentrool and most of what was on the shelves were anti midge potions and midge parafinalia........

other than that i have always enjoyied our stay's in Scotland and are planning a trip up the west coast this year i just think i'll leave it a couple of months till we set off......................................

great link though, i think it would be a good idea to pin this topic or pin the link as it would be a very usefull tool for anyone touring scotland in the summer months.

Nice find................

this is what it say's under the heading

" How do midges hunt "

I challenge anyone to read too stage 5 without itching or scratiching:

  • Stage 1: the insect ‘smells’ carbon dioxide from your breath in an odour plume.
  • Stage 2: the insect then becomes aware of a potential meal and begins to fly towards you, attracted by your breath, sweat and other body smells.
  • Stage 3: the insect usually flies in a zig-zag manner towards you – if they fly out of the odour plume they turn until they are once more flying towards you.
  • Stage 4: tighter and tighter zig-zags are seen as the insect comes closer to you, where it begins to pick up body heat to help it home in.
  • Stage 5: once it lands on you, the insect probes and tastes your skin and decides whether to feed on your blood or fly off in search of a more tasty meal.

On that note i'm off to read another post cos i'm itching like mad AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .................................

know i don't think they are mosqiutos

I have never had a single scottish midgy bite, when all around me are getting eaten alive, i must really taste bad.

However i have been bitten by a mosquito and my arm swelled up to twice the size and it took three weeks of pain and misery to dissapear.

So miquitoes like me, midges don't.

i think that i had best stick to scotland and avoid tha carribean then.

Last weekend in Scotland we found that burning incense worked better than the citronella candles.

dont use tesco's insect repellant worse than useless. I agree that incense smelt nice Caz but the midges are just a menace. think quite a few must have died of alcohol poisoning though :-)

The best thing to use for the midges is avons skin so soft. Might sound silly but it works a treat. I live in Scotland use it all the time. They sell it in the North of Scotland as a midge repellent. Hope this helps.

Love it or hate it "Marmite" I love it, midges hate it, never had any problems, as long as you eat plenty of it.

No I don't work for "Marmite"

    Have a nice trip Tina-Marie
