Hi

we want to buy a camper but only have about £6000 to spend, we have looked at lots of Talbots around that price, can anybody give us some advice on these campers and what sort of milage they do to the gallon.

Any advice would be welcome.

Welcome to ukcs.

Talbots are good reliable base vehicles but bear in mind you are looking at a vehicle which is going to be at least 12 years old.
Peugeot 2litre petrol engines can be a bit tappetty but that's normal,
Fiat 2 or 2.5litre diesels are fine but check when the cam belt was last changed.

Look for rust around the scuttle (under windscreen), rust here and walk away,
Rusty wheel arches, not just the exterior but underneath. open bonnet and check arches under battery and washer bottle.
Door bottoms are liable to rust.
Rusty floors, check just inside doors and check outrigger below seatbelt mountings.
Gearboxes can be notchy and take some getting used too but that normal and they are long lasting,
Exhaust manifolds have a habit of leaking but easily fixed.
Early vehicles don't have power steering but you don't need it very light to drive.
Fuel consumption depends how you drive, size of vehicle, whether coachbuilt, hightop etc. petrol 20 to 28mpg, diesel about 5mpg more.

Get a good one and you won't regret it.

We bought our Talbot a couple of weeks ago and I've only done about 300 miles in it, so I can't comment on the MPG yet. We were lucky, the bodywork is excellent for a 1993, and the previous owner had power steering added. I'm pleased with the inside layout (we decided against a VW because we don't like having a central kitchen area), and there seems to be enough room for us inside. I've only got 2 negatives at the moment (1) we've got the diesel, and it's quite loud when you "push" it (2) the gears are a bit "wooly". I'm having a gear linkage modification carried out in a couple of weeks time by Delfin, which should improve matters.

Hi anscote, i have a Fiat ducato elddis 6 berth coachbuilt motorhome for sale at your budget, it is a 1988 and is well equipped. The areas that bob pointed out to look for are all sound on this van too. It has a 2.0litre petrol engine (61000 miles) and returns around 26 mpg.
