We have a Bedford Midi van with the water pump in the boot. It has been leaking from the casing of the pump (not the pipe connections) although it still pumped water to the single sink tap.
I have just been given an unused but elderly 12V pump and we have taken the old one off and tried this one. We now have two problems!
1) This one switches on and off (at least we can hear the motor cut in and out) with the main Water Pump switch at our control panel but no water is coming through the tap. Looking at the outflow pipe which is clear (the inflow pipe is blue and not transparent), water hardly appears to be moving through the pump, though there is some water in the outflow pipe. There are clear arrows on the pump so i am sure we have connected the pipes the right way round.
2) Turning the tap off does not stop the pump.
Could it be an airlock and why isn't it stopping when we turn the tap off? Any ideas gratefully received?
Regards
Celia

No idea - thats not helpful is it! maybe it doesn't have enough power to pump the water the distance you need or the pump is not working properly, if you wired the pump the same as the old one I can't think of a reason as to why the pump is still running when you turn the tap off, if that didn't happen before.
We've just tried the previous, leaky, pump and the tap turns it on and off okay so can't be the tap switch?? The "new" pump is quite a bit smaller than the old one so may not be powerful enough. Previous pump is a Fiamma SF Superflow Pro 126 new one an Aquaflow.
Off to conduct trials with a bucket!

I am no expert, I would say its an air lock.....as each time I fill my water tank I have to release some air from the pipes before the water will come through although the pump is okay, there should be a connection of the pipes from you tank, where your can open to release the air, as that the only way mine will work..... hope this is some help and good luck.
Think the problem is that the new pump requires to be gravity fed, i.e. it can't "suck up" the water from the tank. Old pump sucks water up from a washing up bowl below the height of the pump and spits it out very happily. (Excuse the technical terms!)
Any recommendations for a good place to buy a water pump, internet or near Nottingham?

its possible that the pump may have stuvk rotor vanes try giving it atap on the side with the handle of a screwdriver see if it changes pitch in the water ie hold it out of the water then drop it in whilst its running if the pump changes pitch its pumping but if it doesnt then its fubed
Thanks for the thought.
Bit nervous about dropping the pump into water as the electrical leads and connections are not sealed.
Have decided that we need a self-priming pump which the one I was given isn't, so have gone ahead and ordered a Fiamma Aqua 8 from agentfiamma.co.uk Fantastic service, ordered yesterday before 12 and it was on my desk at the office when i arrived this morning.
This looks very similar to the leaky one, so hopefully will do the trick. It is larger and heavier than the one I was given so even if we had got that one working (possibly by adding some sort of priming pump) it might not have been powerful enough.
Fingers crossed we can plumb/wire it in tonight.
Regards and thanks to those who have offered suggestions.

I left a message with my email on it as i wanted to speak with you, if possible and ask if you are going to Halloween this year as it will be quite like a reunion for us all.
