I posted this in another section but have had no replies. As I go to the York Show on Friday with the intention of buying a freestanding awning I would really appreciate an answer.
Do the over-the-roof awning guys mark the other side of the motorhome? I imagine that if they are nylon guys they would probably move a little in strong wind.
Or should I forget it and settle for a figure 8 fixing?
Hi Colinbess-- When I erect my freestanding awning, and that is only if I am staying in one place for at least a week or more I have thrown the guys over the roof of the van, to peg down on the other side, but I adjust the far side guys so they incorperate a 2ft long bungy cord on each guy to take up some of the wind movement. I also fit a small length of foam pipe lagging on the guy were it comes into contact with the edge of the roof to save chaffing. The figure of 8 clips are useless as they work loose in any wind. kiev
this all sounds a bit difficult for me so I will leave awnings to the skilled amongst you all and stick with my van and no extra room. I hope you have a lovely time at the York show on Friday.
Hi Colinbess - if you do decide to get an awning take a look at Camping International Ltd if they are there (they were at the Shepton show a couple of weeks ago). They had some Starcamp Moto awnings, which are copies of the Sunncamp Moto, and sold out quite quickly. £169 including groundsheets and 2 birth inner tent. I got one and am pleased with it (though I haven't tried it in stormy weather yet).

I agree - we use the pole and clamp fitting and only through the guy ropes over if staying for more than a couple of nights. Survived a windy Easter this year up in Cumbria but did similar to Kiev and put extra guy rope in to allow for movement,
We're also going to the York show, and are hoping to buy an awning amongst other things. We were thinking of going for the Khyam Motordome - anyone got any opinions on it? Not been to a show like this before - any tips for finding a bargain?
If you do not find what you require at York maybe the below may be of some use to you.
After trawlling the Tinternet for a good deal on an Khyam Motordome Excelsior ( the larger of the two models) I found that Norwich Camping on tele 01603 717 600 was one of the few that had them in stock. At £329.99 delivered was the better of the companies I had tried. So ordered it on Wednesday 15:00 arrived Friday 09:30.
If you just use the main site address you need to do a product search for KYHAM and it will go to the Dome. Ignore the price which is dearer and phone for a better deal if you are going to use them.
Good Hunting, hope you find what you require............Brian
We have returned from the York Show. Could not find a Khyam Motordome to look at and the Starcamp Moto (whilst looking excellent and a great bargain) was not tall enough to fit our ordered but not yet available motorhome (IH Motorcamper Oregon Re). So we have purchased a Maxim from Foxwell products, with optional veranda and bedroom. I was able to do a great deal on this and it was recommended by IH.
Anyway, thanks folks for all the advice. Keep it up!
We managed to get a Nova Trilogy motordome which is identical in design to the Khyam Motordome, but it has much larger windows (but none with PVC - so I'm going to find a way of adapting it in this way). It was £295 including the ground sheets for the main tent & the adjoining tunnel. We had a go at putting it up today and it seemed quite straight forward. My only slight concern at the moment is that it has a hydrostatic head of 1500 - is this enough?
We have a Kymer Motor Dome and it errects in under 3 mins - the poles are in position. It took me only 15 mins to have it set up and totally pegged down this weekend.
It clips to the MH rail with a clever little clip system, so you can drive away if you need to - trouble is they are quite expensive at arond £300.00 without ground sheet.
