Hello, I need your thoughts and views. My MH base vehicle has a manufacturer warranty of 2 years or 18000 miles. The 2 years is almost up and it has only done 7000 miles. There is nothing wrong with the vehicle and I can take it to a franchise dealer 25 miles away for its first service. However, down the road, 1 mile away, is an independent garage that services campers and large vehicles and has all the facilities with computerisation and can check on all vehicles details via their vin number.

With a new car you always take it to a dealer to keep up the warranty, but with campers what do people do? I will take it to one of them if only for an oil change and to get the 'book' stamped - but which one?

Regards

I might be wrong but I thought that with cars you can now go to any garage and the warranty will be maintained.

Hi Keith

Little bit confused if your warranty is the 2 years/18000 miles which ever comes first and has nearly reached 2 years then the warranty issue does not realy come in to it. Where ever you have the vehicle serviced if the service book is fully stamped when you come to sell the vehicle it will have full service history. Sorry if I have grabbed the wrong end of this stick

Regards

John

My understanding of warrantys is that the vehicle must be serviced to the manufacturers specifications ie only recognised parts and oils and the garage must carry approval from the manufacturer of this service, to be certain contact the correct dept of the manufacturer to find out. I do know that some people have there services carried out in europe, perhaps when on holiday, provided its the approved garage of the marque and pay about a third or more less, and still get the all inportant stamping in the service book.  kiev

Does that mean that you have gone nearly 2 yrs without a service ? I am not sure as you don't specify the type of vehicle, but isn't it every 12 mths or so many miles ?

An oil change every year and a brake inspection is essential anyway in my eyes regardless of any manufacturers schedules.

as i understand it to be is , a NEW vehicle can be serviced in any garage that is VAT registered as long as genuine parts are used .  but it should be serviced at least every 12 months ie oil and filter changed . i agree with milemuncher a brake inspection should be done at least once a year but manufacturers seem to have a very high mileage recorded before looking at them ie 20 - 30000 miles.

keith i think you could have a problem with the warrantee if something does go wrong as you have missed the first service in the first year as i see it .

Hi all

I dont if its just me but as the 2 year warranty is about to expire the vehicle can be taken anywhere for service as there is no manufacturer interest any more

Regards

John

Hi Kieth- My motorhome as a 3yr warranty and as had is 6month free check done and stamped in the book. Its next main service is when it is 2yrold OR 12000 miles. I did have the option of having a free check over at 12moths, but found my dealership would charge me about £36 for what was a oil check and other fluids and no more. I have done this myself, but it will go in for its 2yr service Manufacturers would not have these extended service periods if they thought it would be detramental to thier product.   kiev
