When we bought our Trooper we thought it had a leaisure battery fitted alongside the car battery but closer inspection showed we had 2 ordinary car batteries next to each other. Should we bother about getting a Leisure battery or doesn't it make much difference. the dealer has offered to pay for one so that's not a problem. Just wondered what the pros and cons are. have found one for £29 for 85 amp one. Would this be enough? Couldn't fit a bigger one in.

Also do we need a charger for holidays of just over 2 weeks with only fridge ,small kettle and 3 small strip lights? If so can anyone recommend one please?

Thanks Bridie

Hi Bridie

I don't know a Trooper, but if you already have two batteries, you need to determine if they are just connected in parallel to each other, ie, are the red terminals connested together - or are they connected via fuses and a relay? If it's the former, then the two are used to start the van - you would really need to have a split-charge relay fitted, replace the second battery with a leisure one (110aH would be better than an 85aH ), then only run your lights, etc, from this leisure battery. This will ensure the vehicle battery is still fully charged to start the van. You would then normally have an electric hook-up on site, and a mains charger to keep the leisure battery charged. Without this, it certainly wouldn't run what you have in mind for two weeks - but with a mains hook-up the kettle, and possibly the fridge, could be mains powered. The strip lights alone running from the leisure battery should last OK for two weeks.

If its an Autosleepers Trooper & the electrics aint been messed about with change it for a leisure battery as this is a deep discharge type which can be left partly discharged without damage unlike the actual vehicle battery--your dealer should have explained the workings of the van to you better tho--the fridge does not run off the leisure battery at all-on a trooper this should be a 3 way fridge-ie gas/mains electric/or battery only when the engine is actually running-when parked on a campsite you plug into the site electric hookup-you should have a 25mtre lead to plug into the side of your van--this runs the fridge & all the other electrical stuff- and there is also a built in charger to keep your leisure battery charged--if you are parked up but not plugged into electrics--you run your fridge on gas & your leisure battery will run your lights, telly etc for several days--when drive the van again the leisure battery will be recharged by the vans alternator--while you drive the fridge can be switched to work of the van battery but the electrics are fixed so the power to the fridge is cut when the engine is turned off--otherwise flat battery in a short time--

As previoulsy mentioned by the guys above, change it to a Leisure battery, try to get the AGM sealed type(they do not produce any of the nasty gases that the normal batteries do, they also have a very low self-discharge rate of from 1% to 3% per month, and are considered to be much safer.)

If you want to run your fridge of the leisure battery, you can !! but it will cost you money. You will need to have at least a couple fo leisure batteries (big ones  - we have 2 AGM 110's) an inverter (1800W) and a source of charge for when stationary. Again you will need somthing quite large such as a solar panel.(125Watt) With this set up you do not need to plug into the mains electricity at all. But as mentioned this set up will cost you in the region of £1200+

This even has enough power to work the wifes hairdryer !!

We went away for 30 days without electirical hook up, just using the leisure batteries and the the forces of nature.

Another tip, - un-related. If you are in hot climates - South of France Spain etc, before you go of for the day fill a water container 3/4 full with tap water, leave it in the sun. When you get back you will have nice hot water that is more than sufficient to do the dishes in.
