Having decided to sell my TT and get (yet another!) campervan I can't find anything decent in my VERY limited price range. (about £6/7000 as I do not want to take out finance). At this sort of price range the only ones I can find are around the 1987/1992 era. The alternative is to buy a later model van and have it professionaly converted. The question is, what sort of price am I looking at for a fairly basic conversion? I realise that the price is open ended depending on what spec you want. I just want a basic conversion which I could improve on myself. I would like to do the work myself but don't have anywhere to keep the van while converting it.
I am sure one of you clever lot out there will have an answer!
If its a campervan that You are looking for that also will double as everyday transport what about a Mazda Bongo or Ford Freda. They are cracking vehicles for all info please take a look at www.bongofury.co.uk Its probably worth taking a look at members vehicles for sale on this website as some are converted. There are also links to all the well known Bongo Converters in the country including the ones down in Your neck of the woods in Devon where We have a lot of members. At Your budget You should be able to get a really good 1997/8 model but they are all priced competitively anyway.
I have had one since July 06 and its been fantastic to own it.I am also a member of the Owners Club (The Forum is an excellent font of information).
Thanks for your replies. Mazdaman, I did consider a Bongo but I think it may be a bit too small for us (We really need a 3/4 berth) although they look great value for the money.
Gazza tr7, I checked out Rainbow conversions, no prices given and also a bit far away from Devon. I think that I have found a company a few miles from here that do conversions. I don't know the name but I know where they are, so I will pay them a visit tomorrow and try and get some idea of prices. If they are reasonable, I will post the prices as it might be useful to other people with the same idea as me.
I think your best bet is to do the conversion yourself - that way you can get a lot for your proposed budget and you will get something YOU want. Have you looked at The Self Build Motor Caravan Club? (www.sbmcc.co.uk) This is an excellent Club giving tons of advice to converters. Plenty of members have carried out conversions on the house drive! For information, at the York MH event in September one of the Nu-venture companies (can't remember which) was quoting £17k to convert your own supplied panelvan. I reckon to do a full spec. panelvan (long wheelbase) with all the bits new will cost around £8k for the gear. Lot less if you go down the secondhand route and not such a full spec.
I found the company that do conversions and after having a chat with the guy there it seems that I could get a very basic conversion for a 2 berth at about £4000. As I need a 3/4 this is not much good. Still looking at doing it myself, just need somewhere to keep it.
Well we managed to convert our van in the parking space out side our flat - got a bit hot working during the heat of the summer but we did it ! And kept to our budget too !
