Hi - you may have seen my other post - basically myself and husband have been looking for our first motorhome - today we went and looked at one with a view to buy - it vhad been discribed as excellent condition but when we got there we couldnt find a single panel that wasnt dented etc - it was soooo tatty and tired.. we were so dissapointed (also wasted a whole day!)

Anyway we have been back on the net searching tonight... we are now seriously considering going back to our original plan - which was to go to Germany and buy onr there and export it back into the UK.

So many people that are selling motorhomes in this country have done just that and are making good money - we are not doing it to make money - we are just really keen to get as much motorhome as we can for our hard saved cash....

We are a bit ;-( about going out alone to Germany and was wondering if anyone else was considering going to Germany in the near future to buy a motorhome and if so was wondering wheteher anyone would like to come along with us ;-)

We have researched into it and have found a company in Franfurt that have said via email that they would be more than happy to deal with all the necessay arrangements with us for Exporting what we buy back into the UK. Speak good English it would seem.

The Flights (going in a couple of weeks as a rough guide) flying with Ryanair going from Stanstead Airport - cost FOR 2 PEOPLE! return flight (just in case..) is £38.00 RETURN FOR 2 !!!!

And hotels in Germany (Frankfurt) really reasonable and nice.. for a 4 star for a double room FOR BOTH PEOPLE cost is £48 per night.

I have seen that there is info on this site re insuring a motorhome when exporting and returning to the UK.

If anyone is intereseted in coming along with us please reply to this..

If anyone has any advice etc etc pleaseeeeeeeeee reply to this...

Thankyou. Take Care. Lesley.

Hi

Thankyou for your reply - so nice of you to give me all that information.

Questions - is there a reason why you didnt bring it home with you there and then when you bought it? Im just wondering if its possible to go there and bring it straight back - or do you have to allow time before you pick it up?

We were looking at Eddies website - who speaks some english - but we are now thinking that we might buy from the same dealer that you bought from - as you have already done it and would (if you didnt mind...) be able to help with our making plans re where to stay - what airport we need to go to etc etc.. I dont want to take liberties and seem like Im being pushy for information / help....

I have looked at the website where you bought from (I think its the right one anyway..) and there are a few that we really like in our price range.. you say that he has lots of english and irish customers which is really good..

dont mind that the one we will buy will be LHD as you say most of them are anyway..

What Insurance company did you use ? my hubby has rang a couple of insurance companies today - with no joy ;-(

My hubby is still at work - but when he gets home would it be ok to ask some more questions?  I know he will have some.. Its an exciting thought going to Germany to buy one but at the same time a little daunting.... to say the least..

Big Big thankyou once again. (Bet you are really excited about going back to collect your one.. ;-) - we really like the Hymers)

Take Care.

Lesley.

Wohnmobile-galerie gmbh. They are up at itzehoe a train ride from hamburg .We use Air Berlin and stop in Hamburg then get the train up and a taxi to dealers .Yes you can buy there and then but the dealer needs your driving license and passport and the place where he goes to register it is only open certain times  I don't think it's open weekends for instance Any more questions please ask no problem Personally we haven't found a problem but are used to using local transport etc wherever we go.

I know this is quite an old post, but I have just sold my motorhome home and I'm going to import a used one myself.
I have a question for yorkie1 regarding the dealer he bought from in Germany, or anybody else who has been to Wohnmobile-galerie gmbh dealship. Did you find that the photo's you seen on the website were a good representation of the motohomes when you seen them in the flesh, so to speak. I have spoken to the dealer on the phone, and he seems very honest with the descriptions.

Thanks, Jason.

We bought our LHD Sprinter van conversion off a private seller in Germany 4yrs ago.  Probably the most difficult way to do it! :-) We had only gone over for a recce mission but ended up buying one.  We hadn't taken any money, so our main problem was getting the funds over from the UK and into the seller's bank account.  Even with a bank-to-bank transfer it took a whole week and cost us more than we had bargained for because of a drop in the exchange rate at the wrong time.  If I did this again, I'd definitely get the money organised before I went!  It would have been much easier and probably cheaper to fly back to the UK, draw out a wad of cash and fly back. The seller spoke a bit of English and I speak a bit of German so we got by OK and he was kind enough to go with us to the registration office to sort out the transfer of ownership. You need to buy new temporary number plates and have the ownership papers transferred, and buy German 3rd party insurance for the drive back.  They don't take cards, so you need cash for this.  We couldn't get comprehensive insurance from any UK insurer because they wouldn't cover it until it had UK plates.  Once home, it took about a month to get the new papers back from the DVLA and get it MOT'd, and new number plates fitted (again!). We had the headlights changed for the MOT but we have kept the old ones as we will be moving to Europe eventually.  I'd be interested to know if beam-converters alone would have got it through the MOT.  Our mechanic said not.  No problem with the Kph-only speedo.  We got it insured with the Caravan Club. We have been very happy with the purchase.
