You could try asking a policeman, Sooh
Actually Bob I rang our local police station up yesterday just to see if they could tell me 100% what the law is and the lady who answered the call said she would get an officer to ring me back. Funny thing was I didnt really expect anyone to bother to ring back as it wasnt really an urgent police matter and assumed they would have more important calls to attend to, so I thought no more of it and also I never thought to tell my hubby either! However, when I got to work yesterday my hubby said he'd had Lincolnshire Police on the phone saying "I understand you have a query regarding drinking whilst in your motorhome?" My hubby wondered what on earth it was all about until the officer mentioned that the caller had mentioned something about an internet forum and so my husband quickly put 2 and 2 together and guessed it must be ME! Anyway, the officer was very helpful and more or less said what you said in an earlier post and explained that providing it looks like the occupants are parked up for the night then they are not breaking any laws if they have a drink or 2 but like the officer said to my husband it is a bit of a grey area really, basically he gave the impression that the police would use their discression in such situations and I suppose that's all they can do really isn't it?
Phew .............. we can go off to Gatwick now and enjoy a couple of glasses of wine (well I would anyway as my hubby does the driving) but at least that clarifies the matter for us all doesn't it? Just shows though that you cannot just assume anything can you and I am glad this subject was raised cos at least now we all know where we stand legally. But like someone else mentioned alcohol can stay in your system for quite a long time so its best to err on the side of caution just in case. Still we wont be setting off back home too early as I promised my daughter and her husband I would cook them both a full english breakfast in the motorhome on their return from Thailand and I know they are both desperate after 8 weeks touring around Thailand to have some british bacon and a cup of Tetleys tea!
Funny what you miss from home when you are abroad.
Thanks everyone it's been an interesting topic and one all we motorhomers will benefit from.
