Hi.
We are thinking about getting Fibre broadband and we are confused.
We have had City Fibre fit us a little black box through the outside wall. It has 4 green lights and is plugged into router.
When I contacted talktalk they talked about copper lines and something else. I think copper line means telephone line. If they can use telephone line then why did they fit little black box through wall?
I would appreciate your advice please.
Which is the best way to have Fibre come into your home? (Tel or Black box)
Would Fibre 65 with talktalk be OK?
Talktalk also advertise 4k TV. Could someone tell us what 4kTV is and how much it would cost to have it fitted and do we have to pay monthly?
I have tried phoning but I am either talking to the wrong person or I
struggle to understand them. I was on their chat line for 62 minutes and I am no wiser.
Cheers
Len

Who is your internet service provider at the moment? If you've got a City Fibre box you've already got fibre coming in to your house.

My provider is talktalk.
City fibre put city fibre 65 into house, but it must have been a trial because it ran out in October 2022.
Couldn't have been on for long.

Hi Bridlington

I am guessing that the 2 types of Broadband that talktalk are discussing with you are FTTP and FTTC broadband. This website explains the difference well. https://www.moneysupermarket.com/broadband/guides/fttp-and-fttc-what-s-the-difference/

I need fast, reliable broadband for working from home and attending online meetings so I wouldn’t consider anything other than FTTP, however, if you are not so concerned about speed and the occasional drop out, then the cheaper FTTC would be fine.

I am thinking about changing my provider too as the costs are getting way too high. I currently have a Virgin Media 200mbps package deal, which is probably far higher than I need as most of my equipment is probably too old to take advantage of it.

We have had cable to the house for around 20 or so years, even though we live in a village. It was put in by a company called CableTel, who were taken over by NTL World, who were taken over by Virgin Media. The problem I have is that because of this, as far as I know, Virgin Media owns the cable to my home so changing to another provider would mean having a new cable installed and I doubt any other company would want to know.

If you have a BT line to your house you could try them, or companies that use BT line.
We have a BT line , unused for years as we had Telewest Cable when they put it in. Its now Virgin. Its fibre to local junction box but copper to our house I think. Its pretty fast 300mb.

We did have a BT line at one time and I have never actually had it removed. It has probably just been disconnected at the junction box at the end of the road. We haven't used it since we had cable installed. Ours is definitely cable right to the house as I watched them put it in. It goes to a box on the wall by our side gate.

If you are getting 300mbps I doubt whether you have any copper. I don't think it's possible to get any more than about 100mbps through copper, but I could be wrong on that.

We had notification from BT a while ago informing us that the old copper wire phone system was to be replaced. A new box was installed. The old wires and boxes are still in place but redundant. We get about 40mbps here in the countryside, it was 2mbps with the old system.

We are quite lucky here really because despite living in a village we have had full-fibre broadband for decades, and even many in the nearby towns don't have that yet. We currently get 200mbps but we have been told that we could have 1,000mbps (1gbps) if we wanted. Not much point though with our ancient computers. We recently had a major change to our landline phone system, and we now have to have it plugged directly into our broadband hub, and we were told that would soon be the case all over the country.

My contract shows max 384 mb it's usually around 200 supposedly minimum 181mb. It may have been upgraded to fibre as we did have problems for a while when they were doing maintenance.

The BT boxes near all have the fast fibre sticker on them. They have done a fair amount of work around us putting in new cables.

Phone them and select the option that you are thinking of leaving. It's in UK they will negotiate.

We've got Virgin too and it is getting really expensive. Supposed to be going up again next month too. I have to admit though that we have had it for many years now and have had very few problems with it and their service has been excellent. One of the main things I like about it apart from their broadband speed, which nobody else can come anywhere near in this area, is that they own the Tivo box and the broadband hub so if anything goes wrong with either of them they replace it free of charge.

I watched the engineers fit the cable from the cabinet on the edge of our estate to our living room wall and the cable was all fibrus material, not copper. It broke once and I watched the engineer fit another roll into the machine that pushed it underground to the cabinet. He said if the cable was damaged in anyway they had to use a fresh roll.
So I take it that the line to our living room all isn't copper.

That is probably right. If there is any copper used, as far as I know it is usually between the cabinet and the house.
