Over on the Camping and Caravanning Equipment forum Francais reports that he's thrown away some foodstuffs left over from his 2019 camping trip that he found in his trailer..
This set me thinking, so I've checked my kitchen cupboards and found :-
Tin of Chickpeas BB 28/2/2019
Tin of Ratatouille BB 31/5/2018
Part tin Black Treacle BB March 2018
Part drum Bird's Custard Powder BB Nov 2012
And the winner is ! A part box of Tesco Lasagne Sheets BB 18/12/2011
I know a little about food science and I'm happy to eat any of these.
Question is. What's in your cupboard?
------------- Never argue with fools........They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
I'm not telling you!
But "best before" isn't the same as "use by". Common sense to the fore - no if it smells; no if it's gone furry; no if it's gone blue or green; no if the tin lid has domed up; no if strange liquid is leaking out somewhere. We've drunk beer many years after its Best Before date. It's not killed us but frankly it's true - it was indeed past its best.
My, now deceased- father in law once found some Birdseye Cod fillets in his freezer that were four years past its sell by date and ate it. He survived. They’d go straight in the bin if it was me or maybe I would have left it out fior my neighbour’s dreadful, horrible killer cat!
I still have tins in the house with older expiration dates and am not throwing them out.

I'm old school and was brought up before best before, use by's and refrigerators so go with the - if smells fine, tastes fine and looks fine; it's fine by me. I've got herbs and spices that were before dates were put on packaging. My food tastes good to me and others a d I'm still here to tell the tale. What a lot of money is wasted through following these instructions.

Sometimes a little rain must fall before you reach a rainbow.
The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you finish the work.
In our younger, poorer and hungrier days we used to benefit from a friend who regularly purged his fridge of anything past its sell by date. Wonderful, tasty and luxurious stuff that we could never have afforded.

Don't tell me you also raided the skips at the back of the supermarket

When I was at work the other girls would throw away a 4 pint bottle of milk if it had that day’s date on it. Must be made of money.

What a waste!
There is an issue with their stock rotation and replenishment system in place, or lack of, for such large quantity to go down the sink!

When I go into the supermarket, I make a trip to the milk shelf and look for reduced price goat milk with probably that day's date on it. Get it home and pop it in the freezer. Later on, I thaw it and thoroughly enjoy a glass of goat milk. Stay good for several days.
On one of our cycle trips we were passing the local M&S. Popped in to buy some sandwiches and then went round to the cake shelf. There was just one pack containing 2 eccles cakes. Picked them up and the assistant pointed out they were on their sell by date. I assured her it was no problem, they would be lucky if they survived past lunchtime.
