Back this afternoon from a week at our favourite campsite near Bridlington - Thorpe Hall. A fantastic week, we did absolutely b****r all, but thats exactly what I wanted to do! Had activities planned in case the weather was awful but thankfully we didn't need to fall back on them. A great week weather wise (I am lobster red with sun burn ) we got so lucky. Tent back in hibernation fully dry, thats it for this year - no more time off for me this summer.
But blimey the campsite was so quiet. First week of the kids summer hols and the campsite was almost deserted. We've been to the same site at the end of September in the past and it was busier than this last week was. I guess the recent awful weather has put many off? Or maybe money is so tight for many people now (it is for us, we were skint by day 6 but struggled through the last two days!)
Happy hols to everyone venturing out this summer, I hope you enjoy as much as we did!
just back from our first trip out this year, 10 days at shell island, have to agree about it being a bit on the quiet side. It is normally chocker the first week of the summer hols but it was eerily quiet especially the first weekend. The weather was good too, only a few brief showers of rain and we packed dry..yay!!
A dry pack up is a rare treat! Eerily quiet is an understatement - its great to have a campsite to yourself, as it were, but I expected it to be much busier. You've got to feel for the people running the sites, they'll be a few quid down I'm sure this year. Also with a busier site there are more kids around for our eldest to play with and a bit of peace is always good. Not the case this time, didn't get much reading done!
I love Thorpe Hall. we go there every August bank holiday. It will be interesting to see how busy it is then. I think camp sites have really suffered this year. I hope things improve for Jayne at Thorpe Hall - she runs a really good site

Agreed, tonyb21 Thorpe Hall is a cracking little site Jayne does a marvellous job. In a way it was great to have the site "to ourselves" last week but at the same time I missed not having a busier atmosphere (then there's no pleasing some folk!)
Review left for Thorpe Hall after a previous visit (Sept 2010).
I had a week in Harlech last week and the campsite was (almost) spookily quiet. On arrival, the owner did say that they had welcomed very few people this year. Even though it was a lovely week, with only slight drizzle during a couple of nights, nobody else turned up all week.
About 5 tents on two fields last Sunday when I visited DK 168 in GlenCoe...Peak time for holiday makers...and the place was empty...We both commented on the situation..Wondering if the weather WAS indeed playing a big part in folks decisions to camp or not....
