I've just watched some youtube coverage of the Bridgewater Canal filmed by a youtuber who was up at 6.30am on New Year's Day wondering what was going on.
The canal boat was moored and he was awoken by the ropes straining, the whole boat then lurched and listed. On getting out he noticed the canal was flowing like a river. Boats listing, one broke its moorings and was across the canal. They were above third of a mile from a huge breach of the bank and the canal is now more or less drained. They managed to get the boat away from the bank so it has at least settled level, but repairs will take months.
We are near to River Aire and a few weeks before Christmas they completed a multi million pound scheme to prevent flooding similar to 2015. From what I saw the scheme is already preventing flooding of properties downstream.

In January 2021 the river here reached a new high, and there was flooding we hadn't seen in the 22 years we had been living here. This time it was even higher, and flooded again. It doesn't bode well for the future!

A friend lives in the affected area. A container full of materials for the allotments got washed away.
Flooding happens there regularly, but was made much worse this time by the canal bank failing.
Plenty of photos on official news outlets.
After Boxing Day 2015 floods a local charity had two twenty foot containers washed into the River Aire. One beached about 2 miles downstream, but it was badly twisted, door open, all contents gone and had to be removed by crane. Incredibly the second was never found. Suspicion is it broke up and is still in the deep river channel as there are too many shallow sections and weirs downstream.

Hello Alison
Which River has affected you
As the Mersey broke it's banks in Manchester and Cheshire
Caused Destruction Damage very bad Flooding .
Nearest to us affected was Bramhall 3 mile away and Stockport 6 mile
Also Northenden was very badly flooded like Fletchers Moss Didsbury Also .......
We're by the Mersey in Urmston, and although in no danger of flooding ourselves we are not far away from it!
------------- All the best,

We're in Sale right near the mersey and so far so good but the water level has been pretty high, my Aunt lives in Lymm and her house has flooded probably three times in the last ten years, last week it was at her front door but luckily no further. I know Trafford FC in the Flixton/Urmston area had to call off the New Years game due to the ground being badly flooded

My daughter, who lives in Sale, was visiting us over the holiday and flew home on 6th. Jan. Naturally we worried about what things would be like in Manchester, but everything was OK. The real problem was getting there.
At Aberdeen airport, the plane was waiting, but not the flight crew. After a long wait, the ground staff were nearing the end of their shift, so they boarded the passengers who waited in the plane for the flight crew to arrive. Then, they couldn't find the 'dispatcher' and after that, the de-icer broke down.
They finally got away about 2 hours late, but when they landed, the crew at Manchester couldn't find the wheel chocks for the plane, so there was a delay disembarking and unloading the luggage.
After all that, the trams were running OK and our daughter finally got home.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

Planned routes change based on ATC.
Emirates flight from Glasgow sometimes goes via Manchester, other times via a route north of Newcastle. The bad weather may have resulted in reduction of traffic over the north west to accommodate longer landing and take off times in Manchester.
